  3. I like the #XFCE desktop on #Linux and #FreeBSD as it is full featured, bug free, and lightning fast. I noticed the battery life on my new laptop was ok, but found it odd why the CPU was running at high frequencies at all up to 5GHz. So I set the maximum CPU speed at 500MHz, which is faster than the insane speed of a #DEC #Alphaserver in the early 1990's. And this is still that fast, but with 8 cores. And now the battery is on the second day at 86%. Even when compiling code, 500MHz is insanely fast. The battery charge might last longer than some calculators I had...

  7. After quite a struggle, SoftWindows 2.0 is now running on the #AlphaServer DS15A as well. 🥳

  9. Not perfect, but after some sanding and spray-painting, it should look decent.

  11. Trying to rebuild a large chunk of plastic that broke off of the #AlphaServer DS15A's front bezel and was already missing when I got the system.

Using epoxy mixed with black paint. No idea how that will turn out, but even if it works, it will need lots of finishing work to make it look good...

  13. Next project will be fixing an #AlphaServer DS20e. Got the missing front parts for it lately, which were missing from the machine.

  15. Look at this beautiful 1 GHz #Alpha #CPU from an #HP/#Compaq #AlphaServer DS15.

The underside does not have pins, but holes in which wires end. These wires are touching the contacts on the motherboard. There's no socket whatsoever. Weird design.

  17. I've been on the lookout for faster RAM for my ES47 (mattst88.com/computers/es47/) for a few years.

It takes ECC RDRAM in large quantities, which is not common because as far as I can tell it was only ever used by this system and by some early high-end Pentium 4s.

The ES47 currently has 20x 1GB PC800 ECC RIMMs (16 GB effective), which allows the CPUs to run at 1150 MHz. With PC1066 the CPUs could run at 1300 MHz.

But even 10x 1GB PC1066 ECC RIMMs would cost $300+ on today.
