Old (alt), in seiner lat. Wurzel alo und seiner altgermanischen Form alt, bedeutet – ganz überraschend – „ernähren“ und „aufziehen“. Alo bedeutet stärken, wachsen und entwickeln, größer und tiefer werden. Von seiner Wurzel her bedeutet „altern“ und „älter werden“  damit aufwachsen. „Alt werden“ hat jetzt genau das Gegenteil der ursprünglichen Bedeutung angenommen, nämlich: verschlechtert, verfallen, schwach und kraftlos und nicht länger brauchbar. Somit ergibt sich eine grundlegende Zweideutigkeit: „Altern“ bedeutet entweder zu wachsen, zuzunehmen, die Fähigkeiten zu vergrößern und zu erweitern oder abzunehmen, zu verfallen, abzunutzen, altersschwach und ausrangiert zu werden… –

Wachstum oder Regeneration. Es deutet an, dass das Charakteristische  für eine Lebensphase eines Menschen weder vorprogrammiert noch voraussagbar ist; und weiter, dass die Richtung, die das Leben eines Menschen nimmt, nicht festgelegt, sondern offen ist.
