A very nice spot on a summer's afternoon on the banks of the River Aln in Alnmouth, Northumberland.
Such a great place to take a rest and enjoy the view so I was lucky to find it temporarily unoccupied.
On the far side of the river is Church Hill, once the location of St Waleric's Chapel, it faced gradual decline after the reformation, not mention erosion of the hill itself.
However, in the early 1800's a storm saw the sea brake through the low-lying stretch of land between the village and the hill and the course of the River Aln was diverted, effectively cutting off access.
According to Bede, Archbishop Theodore presided over a synod on the hill in 684, in the presence of King Ecgfrith of Northumbria and whereupon St Cuthbert was elected Bishop of Lindisfarne.#england #northumberland #alnwick #coast #historic #landscape #photography

Been to Alnwick today to swap a box of kids books for a handful of weightier tomes at Barter Books. We then popped into town to search out a new independent bookshop. What a brilliant find. The Accidental Bookshop is well worth a visit. Article here from its opening in 2022.

Today I visited Hulne Park in #alnwick #Northumberland . I needed to go to a supermarket, so I had driven to Alnwick, and the weather was so nice I decided to go for a walk. As I just had trainers I decided Hulne Park would be suitable. Most paths are paved tracks, traffic free, which means the trails are mostly accessible. However it would be difficult for a wheelchair to go the whole way as towards the end there are gravel covered tracks and potholes.

Known today especially for its gardens, Alnwick Castle was first buyilt in 1096, possibly on the site of an earlier Roman fort. It was rebuilt in the 1300s and again in the 1700s. The same family has lived there, Percy, since around 1300.
