Martin Bucer, German Reformer, basically says: yes, you decide how much to give—but don’t keep turning up to church with the spiritual equivalent of empty pockets because you don’t trust the committee! The poor are Christ’s little ones.
So the question isn’t “Do I approve of the spreadsheet?” but “Am I actually giving?”

Philip Lindsey, a Presbyterian preacher, noticed that even in his own church people gave money to folks on the corner like they were being mildly extorted—just enough to make the request stop—because they figured beggars could handle it themselves.
Somehow we now call that “discerning giving,” and still act surprised if anyone says it sounds worldly. So… what does warm-hearted giving even look like?

Omar Leslie Kilborn was a Methodist medical missionary to China. Here he makes an appeal for the funding of medical missionaries. He states that many families were so poor, that they would “put out of the way” when an extra child was born was a girl.

How might we be limiting love based on character or country? Are some who are champions of one guilty of a lack in the other?

Henry Augustus Boardman, Presbyterian minister in Philly, writes on biblical instructions for business. The sale of opium to China caused starvation, misery, and ruin. Same thing happens when creditors press debtors. He’s not against paying bills but extracting a pound of flesh.
Is there still a role for church to speak up when actions cause anguish, desperation, and emancipation among their debtors? How can you help the victims? -
Ephrem the Syrian was an early church theologian. He calls hearers to repentance of sins of despising the voice of the poor, and giving them cause to curse you. God actually see this curse as a PETITION! Ephrem points out how cheap are some of the helps.
Today, do we instead pray for “deliverance” **from the poor**, do we go to immense expense to prevent contact in public spaces?
