Dementia is heartbreaking.

But on Thursday night, I was helping my mom get ready for bed.

I hugged and kissed her good night once she was in bed. We said we loved each other.

Then she said something that caught me in the feels. She said that I was the best thing that ever happened to her - “my girl” 🥰

I told her I wasn’t expecting that, clutched my heart and told her that I loved her. Many hugs followed.

I know that one day she may not know me.

Tomorrow I get to see the perfected papers (because it is after wine-time tonight!), but the number of students who talked excitedly about being taken seriously as writers is both heartening and … kinda sad. But the papers are gonna be GREAT

Are there any big feels I’d like to put into a story?

I'd like to write about the paralyzing fear of fascism and authoritarianism as it invades our lives day by day. The utter dispair at the unfairness, the persecution, the shadow docket.

But I'm not done feeling this yet.

One of the most gritty real things I've ever written was in response to the fall of Roe v Wade. I submitted it to an antho on the topic--half the editors said I went too far.
