  1. Abu Dhabi National Oil Chief Executive Officer Sultan Al Jaber met with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo as the war in the Middle East chokes energy flows to Asia. japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/03/ #japan #aljaber #sanaetakaichi #middleeast #oil #energy

  2. The world needs "trillions" of dollars to spur on the green transition and tackle global warming, the head of last year's COP28 climate talks has said, warning that political momentum can evaporate without clear action. japantimes.co.jp/environment/2 #environment #climatechange #uae #cop28 #climatechange #iea #aljaber

  4. #ExxonMobil & #SaudiArabia's #Aramco, world's largest private & state-sector #oil companies, led a pledge by 50 oil & #gas producers at#COP28 #climate summit to cut #emissions from their own operations. Spearheaded by COP28 President Sultan #AlJaber, CEO of #AbuDhabi National Oil Co. Its controversial given none of the companies agree to reduce oil and gas production. But they are planning to stem releases of methane, to near zero by 2030 and stop flaring of #naturalgas. phys.org/news/2023-12-exxon-oi

«I am the man in charge.»
    Shame on you!

  7. COP29 is homeless. It is supposed to be held in Eastern Europe, but under UN rules, the countries in the area have the right to veto, so #Putin has been vetoing every single one of them. In the event of stalemate, #COP29 will be held in Bonn (the UNFCCC seat) under the incumbent president: Sultan #AlJaber. mastodon.online/@vanderbeeken/

  9. @SuneAuken True. Perhaps the greatest contribution of #COP28 and #AlJaber to real climate action is to actually have made crystal-clear evident that COP is infested by fossil fuel interests. But the price is too high, again more wasted time, rising emissions and kick the can even more.

  11. @scientist "Speaking on behalf of the climate system, this our red line: humanity needs to agree on the phasing out of fossil fuels by 2050, and on stopping net deforestation at the same time." #science #COP28 #aljaber

  12. @parents4future It was clear from day one that the conflict of interest would be enormous.

But no, world „leaders“ have happily endorsed this fossil freak show for months. Taking pictures with him, while he played with words and proudly wearing the #COP28 wristband.

And always remember, he’s just the most visible part of a massive infestation of fossil fuel interests in COP and climate negotiations.

  15. “unless you want to take the world back into caves”.

Don’t fall for the FUD argument or appeal to fear fallacy #aljaber used.

Nobody is asking to stop #fossilfuels immediately. But to agree & commit to their fair phase-OUT to meet the Paris Agreement targets.

    The alternative is #climateHell.

Nobody says it will be easy. But if COP’s president argues against t main cause of #ClimateChange this way he proves all critics that he’s a #ClimateCrisis denier & unfit for the task.

  20. #Cop28 president shows true colours - "Cop28 president says there is ‘no science’ behind demands for phase-out of #FossilFuels. #UAE Sultan #AlJaber says phase-out of #coal, #oil and #gas would take world ‘back into caves’. The president of Cop28, Sultan Al #Jaber, has claimed there is “no science” indicating that a phase-out of fossil fuels is needed to restrict #GlobalHeating to 1.5C, the #Guardian and the Centre for Climate Reporting #CCR can reveal.

Al Jaber also said a phase-out of fossil fuels would not allow #sustainable development “unless you want to take the world back into caves”.
    ...
Bill Hare, the CEO at Climate Analytics, said: “This is an extraordinary, revealing, worrying and belligerent exchange. ‘Sending us back to caves’ is the oldest of #FossilFuel industry tropes: it’s verging on climate denial.”
    ...
The comments were “incredibly concerning” and “verging on #ClimateDenial ”, scientists said, and they were at odds with the position of the #UN secretary general, António #Guterres.

#AlJaber made the comments in ill-tempered responses to questions from Mary Robinson, the chair of the Elders group and a former UN special envoy for #ClimateChange, during a live online event on 21 November. As well as running Cop28 in #Dubai, Al Jaber is also the CEO of the United Arab Emirates’s state #oil company, #Adnoc, which many observers see as a serious conflict of interest.

Al Jaber spoke with Robinson at a She Changes Climate event. Robinson said: “We’re in an absolute crisis that is hurting women and children more than anyone … and it’s because we have not yet committed to phasing out fossil fuel. That is the one decision that Cop28 can take and in many ways, because you’re head of Adnoc, you could actually take it with more credibility.”

Al Jaber said: “I accepted to come to this meeting to have a sober and mature conversation. I’m not in any way signing up to any discussion that is alarmist. There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says that the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5C.”

Robinson challenged him further, saying: “I read that your company is investing in a lot more fossil fuel in the future.” Al Jaber responded: “You’re reading your own media, which is biased and wrong. I am telling you I am the man in charge.”

Al Jaber then said: “Please help me, show me the roadmap for a phase-out of fossil fuel that will allow for sustainable socioeconomic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves.”

“I don’t think [you] will be able to help solve the climate problem by pointing fingers or contributing to the polarisation and the divide that is already happening in the world. Show me the solutions. Stop the pointing of fingers. Stop it,” Al Jaber said.

Guterres told Cop28 delegates on Friday: “The science is clear: The 1.5C limit is only possible if we ultimately stop burning all fossil fuels. Not reduce, not abate. Phase out, with a clear timeframe.”
