  2. Meet Nessa! A new OC I made that slots into AlfaFilly's scifi setting for her webcomic theselectioncomic.com/ It was fun to design a character with a lot of autistic traits I resonate with Hopefully there will be more of her soon!

Prodigia is the nation the comic takes place in and English is used as the language spoken. So its accurate to say English isn't her first language.

  3. #Fleabane #Erigeron #annuus is an #invasive #neophyte in #Europe, originally mative from Canada to Florida (USA). It arrived in Europe and #Asia as an ornamental plant in the 18th century and became naturalized.
    C. Wang et al. (2020) studied it in China finding one #alienspecies be able to "generate a #favorable" #speciescommunity #habitat that is beneficial for following ones, using #Solidago #canadensis as 2nd alien.

  5. #NewPaper out

Maria Milanović et al. (2025) Successful alien plant species exhibit functional dissimilarity from natives under varied climatic conditions but not under increased nutrient availability. Journal of Vegetation Science 36: e70032. doi.org/10.1111/jvs.70032

Alien and native species increasing in their abundance did not differ in their leaf traits. We found significantly lower specific leaf area (SLA) with an increase in mean annual temperature and lower leaf Potassium with mean annual precipitation. For trait–environment relationships, when compared to native species, successful aliens exhibited an increase in leaf Phosphorus and a decrease in leaf Potassium with an increase in mean annual precipitation. Finally, aliens' SLA decreased in plots with higher mean annual temperatures.

  8. NeoBiota neobiota.pensoft.net/ the journal which I have the pleasure and honour of being chief editor for the past 14 years, increased its Scopus CiteScore for the third consecutive year to now 8.1 (the journal's all-time high). This means we are in Q1 of #AnimalScience and #Zoology; #InsectScience; #AquaticScience; Ecology, #Evolution, Behavior and #Systematics; #PlantScience; #Ecology; and #EcologicalModelling.

  9. Biological invasions on Indigenous peoples’ lands

Indigenous peoples' land (ILP) host fewer alien invasive species relative to other lands, even if controlling for sampling intensity and other confounding factors. A likely factor are differences in land management practices. ILP and their management practices are hence important to protect nature.

  11. #NewPaper published. Just a few days ago, I sent around the German (shorter) paper, now the English version is out in NeoBiota:

Katharina Myer et al.: Germany’s first Action plan on the pathways of invasive alien species to prevent their unintentional introduction and spread.

  14. My lucky weekend: We got two papers accepted where I am co-author.

One with an international team from alien-scenarios.org/#three where we provide European scenarios for future biological invasions.

The other with my dear colleagues from Vienna and Basel where we related the occurrence of threatened European butterflies with climate change and atmospheric nitrogen deposition.

Stay tuned for further information, once the papers are out.

  15. New paper out: Future changes in key plant traits across Central Europe vary with biogeographical status, woodiness, and habitat type.

Future native woody assemblages are projected to increase in height, specific leaf area and seed mass. Herbaceous height increases and specific leaf area decreases in most habitats. Greater magnitude in trait change in non-native than native plant assemblages.

  16. New journal #ImpactFactors are out. I know that it is highly disputed performance measure. It reflects rather whether authors produce papers that readers like and cite, than editorial foresight. That of NeoBiota increased to 5.1.

Still I am happy that our scientific community on #AlienSpecies (exotics, non-natives) value and trust our journal so much. Thank you to authors, reviewers, associate and special editors and the great production team at Pensoft Publishers.

  17. A new study (sciencedirect.com/science/arti) found that the global economic impact of biological invasions is equivalent in magnitude to that of natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, floods and storms.

The costs of biological invasions have increased more rapidly than those of natural disasters over the past 4 decades.

Societies need to build a culture of safety & resilience against the threat of #BiologicalInvasions - just as we have done for natural hazards.

  19. A #tiger escaped from a residence and roamed the countryside outside Johannesburg, South Africa, for four days this month. It attacked a man and killed several animals.

Tigers aren’t native to South Africa and are considered an alien species. Its escape highlights the country’s controversial commercial captive breeding industry and the key role South Africa plays in the international big cat trade.
