Questo volume è finito nella mia biblioteca perché l’ultimo racconto, Troppa felicità, che dà il titolo al libro, è basato sulla vita di Sof’ja Kovalevskaja, matematica, attivista e scrittrice russa. È uno dei racconti più belli della raccolta.

L’altro racconto che mi ha lasciato senza fiato è stato Bambinate, dove l’autrice ci porta per mano in una storia apparentemente ordinaria per farci precipitare nello straordinario un poco alla volta, nelle ultime pagine. Questo modo di procedere, in verità, è tipico dei suoi racconti più belli.

Poi ci sono dei racconti che mi hanno lasciato perplesso, che non ho capito, tipo Legna e Wenlock Edge. O forse in alcuni racconti la Munro non vuole per forza trascinarci nello straordinario, ma lasciarci in sospeso o nell’ordinario. Anche in quel caso ci riesce benissimo, devo dire.

Munro's work includes sharp observations of female friendship, mother daughter relations, and the limits of provincial cultural life. One story depicts a middle aged man engaged in unsolicited sexual display in front of the young female protagonist; this scene is at once utterly grotesque and totally unforgettable.

I'd strongly recommend "Lives of Girls and Women" . Unfortunately, you will almost certainly not be as lucky as me when I picked up my Penguin copy for a dollar!
