#CastrationSquad - "The X-Girlfriend" (1980)
Has no one talked about these foundational women here before? CS were a short lived all-female Hollywood #DeathRock band featuring half a dozen folks who'd turn up in more famous bands: #AliceBag, Mary Sims aka #DinahCancer, #Phranc, Elissa Bello, Tracy Lea etc. Their nominal leader was Shannon Wilhelm, whose horror-movie style, biting wit, and raging fearlessness - the tales of her adventures I’ve heard are jaw-dropping - made her perhaps TOO intense a presence to thrive. A bootleg of a live KPFK radio performance was all they left behind, and Shannon passed away in the mid-90s. But this song and her wild performance (“she’s always there . . . the . . . ex . . . girlfriend!”) deserves to be better remembered.
