Alice Munro's "Lives of Girls and Women" impressed me.
Whether one thinks of it as a set of linked short stories or as novel, the book clearly belongs to that line of North American fictions representing slices of small town life of which Sherwood Anderson's "Winesberg Ohio" is a notable early example.
Munro's work includes sharp observations of female friendship, mother daughter relations, and the limits of provincial cultural life. One story depicts a middle aged man engaged in unsolicited sexual display in front of the young female protagonist; this scene is at once utterly grotesque and totally unforgettable.
I'd strongly recommend "Lives of Girls and Women" . Unfortunately, you will almost certainly not be as lucky as me when I picked up my Penguin copy for a dollar!

The harassment ended only when Andrea reached puberty... Munro’s response made it clear that she was right to be afraid. It was “as if she had learned of an infidelity,” Andrea recalled in her essay for The Star.

'We were deeply troubled to learn of Andrea Robin Skinner’s experience of childhood sexual abuse. Ms. Skinner has our unwavering support.
At this time, we are pausing the Chair appointment as we carefully consider Munro’s legacy and her ties to Western.'

CW: CW: References sexual abuse, Alice Munro
Canadian author Alice Munro's daughter Andrea Robin Skinner was sexually abused by her stepfather, Gerry Fremlin, who, years later, pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault against her and received a suspended sentence. In an essay for the Toronto Star, Skinner wrote that her mother knew of the abuse and said it had "nothing to do with her," leading to their estrangement. Here's more from the AP.

That Munro story is hella triggering. So many women have similar experiences, minus the fame that brings the spotlight. #WritingCommunity #canlit #AliceMunro

First Neil Gaiman, now Alice Munro.
I'm especially surprised by the revelations made by Munro's daughter and very sad for what she had to endure.
Artists of all kinds, even brilliant ones like Munro are humans and their actions and errors can deeply harm others. It is even sadder to know that her own daughter was one of the most affected by this. I know cases in real life that are similar to what happened in this case, and it is very difficult to witness.
I think often about divorcing authors and their work, but it is not always possible. I will always enjoy Munro's stories for their humanity and depth, this is just one more thing to keep in mind when reading her in the future.

CW: Report of abuse
Another shattering revelation about a revered writer…
From Andrea Robin Skinner, youngest child of Nobel Laureate Alice Munro -
"I ... wanted this story — my story — to become part of the stories people tell about my mother," she wrote. "I never wanted to see another interview, biography or event that didn't wrestle with the reality of what had happened to me and with the fact that my mother, confronted with the truth of what had happened, chose to stay with and protect my abuser."

CW: Alice Munro, CSA
Link to the archived, non-paywalled Toronto Star piece.
Summary: Alice Munro knew her second husband had sexually abused her youngest daughter for years, and did/say nothing, even after he was sentenced for sexual abuse, even after his death.
Same story, from the victim's perspective:
