  1. RE: mas.to/@RichardJMurphy/1165148

All that is left is hoarding money and extracting rent, but "what matters now is the capability of people, which is the very thing that neoliberalism wants to destroy."

#AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry, a tool that could be used for #IntelligenceAugmentation (IA), but instead is used to maximize extraction and destruction.

  2. I'm positively surprised to see so much sense coming out of #Google #Deepmind, for a change. What's going on?

I've made a closely related argument earlier:

    arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

There are good logical and organizational reasons why living beings are sentient, but algorithmic systems can never be.

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

  3. "We argue [computational functionalism] fundamentally mischaracterizes how physics relates to information. We call this mistake the #AbstractionFallacy. Tracing the causal origins of abstraction reveals that symbolic computation is not an intrinsic physical process. Instead, it is a mapmaker-dependent description. It requires an active, experiencing cognitive agent to alphabetize continuous physics into a finite set of meaningful states."

  4. RE: masto.ai/@discoverflux/1161719

This was so much fun! Quite the ramble. Thanks, @mattsheffield for having me on!

    Computationalist transhumanism is scientific Trumpism.

  5. Due to recent events, it's more important than ever to realize that AI "agents" are not, and won't ever be, proper agents:

    arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

    #OpenClaw #Moltbook are #AlgorithmicMimicry on #Steroids

  6. #OpenClaw and #Moltbook are not "the first step towards the singularity" unless that singularity involves us all drowning in nonsense and asocial behavior: theshamblog.com/an-ai-agent-pu.

Any sane and sustainable society would legislate malicious fake personalities out of existence. With draconic measures.

Shows you just how far we are from a sane and sustainable society.

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry on #steroids now...

  7. I didn't expect #WillIAm (of #BlackEyedPeas fame) to have one of the best takes on AI vs. human creativity. But here we are:

    youtu.be/vWQrC-lG8FQ&t=546

"imagination regurgitation" and a total lack of judgment...

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

  8. @anilkseth

And, most important of all: generating conscious AI would be a really, really stupid and irresponsible thing to do.

Where I still disagree: #AlgorithmicMimicry is also *not* real intelligence. True intelligence not only solves, but *frames* problems.

    But that's a minor quibble.

This is going in exactly the right direction...

  9. But it misses one additional and fundamentally important point: true agency, judgment, creativity, and imagination are only possible if you are a self-manufacturing living system that has to invest physical work into your own continued existence; you can't get these things in an algorithmic framework:

  10. As I tend to say: you can create a perfect simulation of your bicycle, just by thinking systematically, but you still can't ride that simulation to work.

I'm amazed just how many otherwise intelligent people don't seem to understand this simple fact…

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

  11. Every time you say your chatbot
    "thinks, reasons, means, understands, creates"
    a little kitten dies.

    And every time you say
    "AI agent"
a whole species of cute furry animals goes extinct.

    SO. JUST. DON'T!

    Algorithms have no agency,
    don't think, don't understand,
    don't generate meaning,
    are not creative.

    And they never will.

    I explain it here: arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

and in the UNDP2025 Report (see pictures below).

  12. Today, the 2025 #UNDP Report was released, with a little spotlight by yours truly on "Humans have agency, algorithms do not" (pp. 36-38):

  15. Remember: "reasoning models" aren't reasoning. They just incorporate additional reinforcement learning after brute force training data fitting.

    It's just a different kind of #AlgorithmicMimicry

    arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

  16. This is *the* fundamental aspect of general intelligence. But algorithms cannot (and won't ever) be able to do this (by definition). This is why all talk about AGI is just bullshit.

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

  17. Been podcasting some more: youtube.com/watch?v=YU7bSiiBZa

This time with Trent Fowler on #Futurati. We talk about organisms & algorithms and why we won't get #AGI from the latter.

    #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry

  18. "... life can only be known by life." (Hans Jonas)

It's that simple. Algorithms will never have the properties of the living.

By any reasonable definition of "life" and "algorithm."

  19. #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry paper is accepted in @nbdt_journal!

Many thanks to Alex Gomez-Marin for editing!

    Preprint available here: arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515.

Please help me make this argument heard above the din of the current AGI "debate."

  20. Talks from the recent #Convergence2023 workshop at the Austrian Academy of Sciences are now online. My favorite was Amber Case. My own talk with Tarja Knuutila about why #AI is #AlgorithmicMimicry is also on the list. Go have a look!

  21. Machines won't take over the world, but we are giving away our agency to machines that have none.

  22. Hive mind:

Where would you send something like this, to get visibility in #biology?

    arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

Also: despite being on the #AI arXiv section, I'm not getting any engagement.

Can anyone help getting this more traction? I think the argument is really original & important. It grounds a lot of the discussions about semantics in the biology of the organism.

  23. Next editorial rejection already in.
@CellSystemsCP sent me two sentences. The first says the paper "would have a wider & more appreciative readership elsewhere." At least, the second sentence apologizes for the useless & generic content of the first...

The problem is that "elsewhere" has already rejected me. In the meantime, you can read the preprint here: arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515

Ah. I see my idea that AGI doomerism/bloomerism is nothing but thinly-veiled catholic dogma is catching on: johannesjaeger.eu/blog/machine.

It's a salvation narrative for deluded times. A Middle Ages reboot, basically.

  25. Here's @parismarx with an excellent article on LeGuin's warning that producing commodities is not the same as creating art. AI only manages the former and will help the corporatocracy to close us off from a better future for humanity. Read it!

  26. Just submitted my article on AI (arxiv.org/abs/2307.07515) to @eLife, hoping that they'll have a look at it despite it being purely theoretical research.

I have a suspicion that @ct_bergstrom may find it interesting.

The urgent aim is to not only reach AI nerds (via the AI section of @arxiv_cs), but also the community of experimental biologists who tend to sometimes forget about the organism, its organization, and the unique characteristics of living systems.

  27. Our first arts & science outreach event for the #PushingTheBoundaries project this Friday was a full success.

    Living beings are not machines!

We had a higher turnout than expected.

Techno-trandscendentalism #TESCREAL is spreading like wildfire in influential tech-affine circuits, and also in the so-called #MeaningMaking and #GameB communities.

It is an ideology that is dangerous and deluded.
