  3. Italy: Authorities Renew 41bis Solitary Confinement of Anarchist Prisoner Alfredo Cospito

Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio has renewed the 41bis solitary confinement regime against anarchist Alfredo Cospito, held in Cagliari prison. The measure was communicated directly to the prisoner by the ministry itself. Fabio Ramelli, vice-president of the Chamber of Deputies of the Brothers of Italy, justified the decision by stating that it corresponded to “the profile of political and social danger that anarchism represents,” describing Cospito as a point of reference for anarchist insurrectionary movements. This measure is widely denounced as state retribution and a form of torture.

  4. Italy renews 41bis regime against Alfredo Cospito

‚Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio has decided to renew 41bis for Alfredo Cospito. The measure, expected by 4 May, was notified to defence attorney Flavio Rossi Albertini and confirms the hardest possible line: no retreat, no review, no doubt. It is not a technicality. It is not administrative routine. It is a deliberate political choice that must be called by its name: revenge.

41bis is not a simple restrictive measure. It is prolonged isolation, deprivation of contact, restriction of speech, rarefaction of social life to the point of unbearable. It is a regime that depletes the person, that reduces existence to controlled survival. For this reason, for years, jurists, observers, and organisations have labelled it a form of torture. Not a metaphor: a description….‘

  9. Turin: 18 Anarchists Sentenced for Demonstrating in Solidarity with Alfredo Cospito

The trial in the first instance of one of the two parts of “Operation City,” related to the March 4, 2023 demonstration in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito (who at that time had been on hunger strike for months against Article 41 bis and life imprisonment without the possibility of parole), concluded last Thursday, April 16. As a result, all the defendants were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 18 months to 5.5 years.

The charges of conspiracy to commit devastation and looting, which had already been rejected by the defendants, were dropped by the courts, reducing them to conspiracy to commit aggravated damage and conspiracy to commit assault against a public official. During the session, 18 sentences were handed down, ranging from five and a half years to one and a half years in prison, as well as substantial fines to the Turin City Council (€33,000), various companies (approximately €13,000), and the legal costs of the civil prosecution (€16,000) for 16 of the defendants. As the defense lawyers emphasized, most of the defendants were not convicted for specific actions or events, but rather for “moral complicity” or “facilitating the conduct of others.”

    ACCOUNT FROM AN ACCUSED COMRADE:

The trial in one of the two parts of Operation City, related to the March 4, 2023, demonstration in solidarity with Alfredo Cospito, who had been on hunger strike for months against Article 41 bis and life imprisonment without parole, concluded on April 16, 2026. On that day, thousands of comrades and supporters marched through the center of Turin, demonstrating with fury and leaving behind only a small fraction of the violence unleashed everywhere by various governments and their armed forces. The charges of conspiracy to commit devastation and looting, which had already been rejected by the defendants, were also dropped by the courts, reduced to conspiracy to commit aggravated damage and conspiracy to commit assault against a public official. All the defendants were found guilty and sentenced to terms ranging from 18 months to 5.5 years.

Meanwhile, the trial of other comrades accused in connection with the same day of protest is also underway, a separate procedure to expedite the so-called first phase.

On March 10, during the preliminary hearing, the investigating judge dismissed the charges against the suspects who had been arrested before the start of the march, accused of minor offenses (Article 115 of the Penal Code), despite the prosecutor’s request for their conditional release. The comrades accused of complicity in acts of vandalism, aggravated resistance, and possession of offensive objects have been sent to trial, and a hearing has been scheduled for November 11, 2026: a total of 29 charges.

We reiterate that Alfredo Cospito remains subjected to the torture regime of Article 41-bis, and that this will likely be extended in the coming days. That period of struggle alongside Alfredo succeeded in placing state torture and the vengeful “justice” of courts and politicians at the center of public debate, highlighting their contradictions. But the fight against Article 41-bis continues.

    In any case, no regrets.

  17. Update on Repression in Italy: “Operation City”

“Operation City”, a crackdown on the mobilization against 41bis prison regime in Italy  and solidarity with anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito From October 2022 to April 2023, a strong solidarity movement accompanied the hunger strike of Alfredo Cospito, an anarchist prisoner in 41-bis, the most afflictive prison regime in the Italian penitentiary system, a regime of extreme harshness and isolation, a tomb where one spends 22 hours in a cell, with hardly any possibility to communicate with the outside world (censorship on all communications and with only a one-hour visit per month with a family member or a ten-minute phone call, also a month). Initiatives, demonstrations, direct actions have marked in Italy, and in many other parts of the globe, the steps of a heterogeneous movement that has grown to give strength to Alfredo’s protest. A protest which not only called for the transfer of Alfredo himself from the 41bis regime but also demanded the abolition of this legalized torture together with that of ostensive life imprisonment i.e., life sentences without the possibility of access to parole or benefits, with which the Italian State as of today condemns almost 1300 prisoners to die in prison. A government that is strongly characterizing its policy on the tightening and embitterment of laws and sentences, obviously had no problem ignoring, and sometimes mystifying, that struggle that highlighted the State’s torturer’s true face and it certainly would not have given in, if Alfredo, after 6 months of struggle, had not interrupted his hunger strike. But the objectives of protest and mobilization remain on the table of causes worth fighting for. Obviously that same government, which probably would have left our comrade to die of hunger, did not delay in presenting the bill with investigations and trials in various territories and cities where the solidarity mobilizations of those months spread like wildfire. In the city of Turin, this government counter-offensive is manifesting itself mainly through the so-called “Operation City”, an investigation which has provided a good number of preventive measures (such as house arrests, obligation to sign on in police stations on a daily basis, ban from accessing certain cities, obligation to not leave your town of residency, etc…) and has led to several trials for which hearings are being celebrated at the present moment. The contested crimes refer to different moments of the mobilization, but most of the comrades on trial are accused in relation to the events that occurred during the international demonstration that took place in Turin on the 4th of March 2023, when Alfredo had been carrying out a hunger strike for almost five months with an inevitable worsening of his physical conditions. The events that occurred during the demo are classified under the charge of “complicity in devastation and looting”. “Devastation and looting” is the most serious crime that can be contested in the field of public order under Italian State law, which provides for high sentences (from 8 to 15 years); “complicity” on the other hand, does not require that the defendant has carried out a “criminal action” in itself but it is his mere presence at the demo which constitutes a crime of “complicity” with any criminal action that happened during the demo. The call into question of the count of “complicity” reveals the political purpose for which it is used: to scare and dissuade people from demonstrating because the punishment could affect anyone who decides to take to the streets. For this reason, the juridical concept of “complicity” must be fought with the aim of not giving up space to the criminalization and demobilization of street conflict, an inevitable element in any path of real criticism of political and economic orders. As far as we are concerned, the practices implemented during that demonstration are nothing other than the response to the violence that the State wanted to exercise against its enemies for yet another time, at a moment when its intention to  psychologically and physically annihilate our comrade Alfredo Cospito was clear. In the same way, we believe the self-defence of demonstrations is essential to protect the safety of the demo itself and make the identification of demonstrators more difficult. These are practices that belong to the heritage of every movement that wants to position itself in opposition to the State – practices that are increasingly pilloried, criminalized and stripped of their political meaning to reduce their presence in public demonstrations merely to a problem of “public order”. Our considerations regarding the international demonstration of March 4th 2023 are few but immutable: the importance of having been there in that specific and crucial moment of the mobilization, the expression of anger towards an announced death sentence, the affection and gratitude towards a comrade who put his life on the line to fight against a world of exploitation and authoritarian abuse. At the moment, the trials involve over 60 people; thus, the legal expenses are high and all contributions are welcome. For any contribution, please write to: [email protected] Today, as always, on Alfredo’s side, against the 41-bis regime and life sentence without parole, against all prisons and all governments! 18. A Call for International Solidarity with Alfredo Cospito

A CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY: NO COMRADE WILL BE LEFT ALONE IN THE HANDS OF REPRESSION!

Alfredo Cospito is an anarchist comrade jailed since 2012, initially arrested and sentenced (along with another comrade) for kneecapping the CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare. He has served his sentence for that crime (the other comrade is now free), but he is currently serving a 23-year sentence issued in the “Scripta Manent” trial. This was a repressive operation against 20 years of FAI/FRI actions. Comrade Anna Beniamino is also serving a 17-year sentence for this repressive operation.

In May 2022, he was placed in 41 bis, a “harsh prison” regime invented in the ’90s to psychologically annihilate mafia “chiefs” and force them to cooperate. It is now extended to over 700 prisoners, including members of revolutionary groups such as BR-PCC. In October 2022, Alfredo began a six-month hunger strike against the 41-bis regime and life sentences without parole, his likely fate according to the terrorism and political massacre charges (and the prosecutor’s request), which essentially amounts to a death sentence while alive. He chose to risk his life because fighting until his last breath was worth it rather than being sentenced to the “tomb of the living,” which is precisely 41 bis.

A huge mobilization supported his struggle and gained incredible resonance, especially thanks to widespread international actions. For the first time in Italy, this “untouchable” anti-Mafia tool was publicly questioned. His hunger strike ended in April 2023 without most of his requests being met. However, he finally avoided life imprisonment after his case was brought to the Constitutional Court.

Now, three years later, 41 bis is increasingly a model for repression in the EU and beyond. Both Chile and, more recently, the Netherlands are adopting this torture tool in their prison systems. As Alfredo stated in his latest communiqué in court during a January 2025 trial:

“If the imperialist war of the West spills over from Ukraine’s borders and reaches our doorsteps, if social conflicts surpass the sustainable limit of a fragile system, or if a gradual transition to a regime is not feasible, 41bis, with its veneer of legality, will be the ideal tool for forced social anesthetization. It will be a kind of castor oil to bring recalcitrant elements into line—a gradual coup d’état in accordance with the law. This would explain why an emergency regime is needed in the absence of a real emergency.”

Alfredo’s four-year 41bis term will expire in May 2026. Before signing the expected two-year renewal, the Minister of Justice will hear the opinions of the Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism departments. It is worth noting that Minister Carlo Nordio recently played a key role in the swift and sudden release and repatriation of Al-Masri, who was arrested in Italy on the orders of the International Criminal Court. This move could be interpreted as a sign of gratitude for his outstanding work on behalf of the Italian government in torture camps for migrants in Libya.

We have nothing to ask nor hope for from the state. In fact, we are its enemies, and it treats us as such. In recent years, several trials have begun against comrades accused of participating in the mobilization in various ways. This demonstrates once again that one of the main aims of repression is to attack solidarity. This should not cause us to withdraw but rather provide an opportunity for a new beginning. We want to continue the struggle with Alfredo against the prison regime that has him locked up so that he knows, despite his total isolation, that his comrades are there and will not leave him alone.

However, we also want it for ourselves. We conceive of active and combative solidarity with prisoners as an integral part of the perspectives and projects we develop toward anarchy and against the prison society in which we all live.

Solidarity knows no boundaries or nations.
Let’s take up the weapon of solidarity!

  20. Italy: Call to Send Mail to Alfredo Cospito Against Censorship and Isolation

To break the isolation to which Alfredo Cospito is subjected, in particular through the almost complete blocking of mail, his supporters are calling for a massive letter writing to him. Even if letters and postcards can be blocked by the prison administration, this testifies to the existence of significant support for the anarchist prisoner held under the 41bis solitary confinement regime. They point out that it is useful, even if they are not tracked letters or even if they are simply postcards, with or without indication of the sender. Previously, a campaign to send tracked letters had been organized. They have been blocked and the Court for the Execution of Sentences is due to rule on the case in the coming weeks. Finally, in addition to the question of the mail, on September 14 there will be a hearing about the “judgment of conformity”, in relation to the prison of Bancali (where he is detained): this is a procedure where the judge will rule on the ability of the prison to enforce an authorization granted [to a prisoner], but from which he is not really allowed to benefit. It is about the possibility for Alfredo to access the establishment’s library, something that had been authorized, but without him ever being able to benefit from it. If he decides that Alfredo is right, the judge will appoint another figure, outside the prison administration, to ensure that this authorization is respected.

His supporters propose that each collective or individual who wants to participate in this mobilization commit to sending at least seven postcards to Alfredo, during a given week in order to guarantee the visibility and continuity of the campaign. Individuals or groups can send their availability to [email protected] before September 1st. Based on availability, we will draft a schedule in which each individual/collective will be told a week during which to send cards/letters to Alfredo.

  22. Updates on the Prison Situation of the Anarchist Alfredo Cospito

THE TOTAL BLOCKADE OF CORRESPONDENCE TO THE ANARCHIST COMRADE ALFREDO COSPITO PERSISTS

Update at the beginning of July 2025. In these days there is again news regarding the particularly afflictive situation that the management of the Bancali prison, probably in concert with the Ministry of Justice, is imposing on our anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito, in particular with regard to correspondence.

We remind you that the censorship of incoming and outgoing mail is a constituent element of the 41 bis regime to which the comrade is subjected. For a long time Alfredo has not received letters, postcards, telegrams and communications of any kind. This despite the fact that many of us are continuing to write to him, even with collective correspondence initiatives such as the one that took place in Foligno on May 31st. In addition, the prison management has long since stopped communicating to the prisoner the notification of censorship, a document against which to appeal to receive the correspondence material seized. The mail simply disappears into thin air.

This behavior is added to a long series of persecutory provisions, aimed at the psychological and political destruction of the comrade: from the denial of access to books already ordered and authorized, to CDs or headphones to listen to music, to the reporting to the bar association for his defenders guilty of having shaken his hand and given him a kiss at the time of the interview – that is, guilty of treating him as a human being.

All this in an already enormously afflictive context such as that of 41 bis which provides for two hours of air a day in groups of up to four people decided by the ministry, one hour of interview per month with a family member separated by glass or alternatively ten minutes of phone call during which the authorized family member must go inside a barracks to call. As well as, as already mentioned, the censorship of correspondence and the impossibility of reading books that concern topics considered sensitive (and the great difficulties in finding any book in general).

We firmly denounce that this persecution is evidently a state revenge for the intransigence and determination with which the 2022-23 hunger strike and the international solidarity mobilization were conducted, putting the spotlight on that gray area that is 41 bis with unprecedented intensity, going to undermine that false celestial aura that surrounds the anti-mafia-anti-terrorism structure.

A persecution that also occurs the day after the sentencing of Undersecretary Delmastro to 8 months for disclosures of official acts, which arose precisely in the scoundrel attempt to smear Alfredo Cospito during the hunger strike.

The misery of these characters in the face of the coherence of an anarchist who has never bowed his head jumps to the eye. On the one hand, those who kneecap a nuclear sorcerer, on the other those who on New Year’s Eve high on cocaine in a moment of rare coherence shoot themselves in the legs.

In the climate of world war that we breathe these days, we reiterate that these episodes must be read as real war policies towards the internal enemy. Great are the challenges that engage revolutionaries in a historical period of this type, but all the more reason we cannot and do not want to leave anyone behind. For whoever forgets the prisoners of the revolutionary struggle forgets the revolutionary struggle itself.

In view of the possible renewal of 41 bis for Alfredo Cospito in May next year, let’s ensure that this too returns to being a battlefield full of contradictions for the State.
