  10. The #SouthCarolina Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the #murder convictions & life sentence of disgraced lawyer #AlexMurdaugh in the #shooting deaths of his wife & younger son.

In a unanimous ruling, the justices said conduct by the court clerk “egregiously attacked Murdaugh’s credibility” by suggesting to jurors his testimony could not be trusted. They also said the judge went too far in allowing evidence of Murdaugh’s financial #crimes into his murder trial.

  12. Watched the hearing about whether or not #AlexMurdaugh should get a new trial based on the behavior of the clerk of court. It was interesting. I feel bad for the jurors, who just want to go back to their lives but keep getting yanked back into this circus.

  13. Did #AlexMurdaugh leave his hot dog costume back at the cell before he spoke today

  15. So my Mom & I have been watching the #AlexMurdaugh #Murder #CourtTrials & my Mom was so fast to be like - he's the killer! He's got clean clothes! He's not really crying - then my Mom demonstrates to me, how she'd react if she even THOUGHT of fact we got shot & killed. So my Mom was like - he's guilty.

  16. #AlexMurdaugh It’s chilling how much evidence was recovered from the phones of the victims and defendant.
E.g., when precisely the victims’ phones were locked for the last time, the videos on one of the victims’ phones putting the defendant at the crime scene, and even how many steps the victims and defendant had traveled in a specific minute.

  17. What makes me ask if this assessment is correct is this:

When people can see highly placed, wealthy and powerful men, notably white ones like Alex Murdaugh, get away with endless gaslighting and endless crime ….

When such men are never held responsible and they're at the top of society:

What makes us think things may really be changing now, with the Murdaugh conviction?

Some very conspicuous powerful criminal rich men continue free, continue gaslighting, after all.

  18. I hope that Mandy Matney's assessment of what Alex Murdaugh's conviction means is right: she says that he was trying to gaslight everyone, because, as a rich white man, he thought he could get away with it. So:

"The case is a huge wake-up call to people who have been abusing the system and relied on old traditions and horrible ways of thinking. Pretty much all of Alex’s victims are Black people, children and the infirm. They’re getting justice, too."

  19. @danyork There's also Farhad Manjoo's article at the NYT: "Why Alex Murdaugh’s Quick Conviction Worries Me"

[P]rosecutors reconstructed a tight timeline of the crime using lots and lots of data. Among other sources, they extracted information from Alex, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh’s iPhones, call records of family and friends, location and speed data from Murdaugh’s S.U.V., entry logs from his office security system, images from automatic license plate readers mounted on public roads, communications on social networks and messaging apps, reams of financial data and video and audio recorded on Murdaugh’s 911 call .... [P]rosecutors in the Murdaugh case claimed to find many deeper truths in the digital record. And it’s in their interpretations of the data that they sometimes lost me. Often, they seemed to be finding patterns in the data that didn’t necessarily hold true, and this made me wary that the authorities can build outlandish stories from our data.

Surveillance capitalism melds with the surveillance state. Sure, this case seems to be a highly-plausible murderer convicted through digital forensics, but far more mundane or harmful possibilities loom.

Cardinal Richelieu's (apocryphal) "six lines" quip comes to mind.
