This week's #NewBooks at the library: Some more unusual acquisitions from 2025.

- I purchased the last copy of the definitive retrospective on the #palaeoart of Zdenek #Burian from Albatros Media. Volume 3 focuses on his artwork of prehistoric humans. All these books are written in Czech, but the artwork is just lavish, and I'm a sucker for period palaeoart.

- I found a second-hand copy of the reissue of #AlexanderVonHumboldt's Views of Nature, released by the University of Chicago Press.

- #Spookslot - 44 jaar te gast bij de geesten, a Dutch book I hunted down via a friend, which was released to commemorate the closure of one of the most beloved attractions, Het Spookslot (a haunted house), in De #Efteling, a well-known Dutch amusement park I used to go to quite often as a child. I know they have completely rebuilt it into a new ride now with nods to the classic panoramic show, but I haven't visited it yet.

Alexander von Humboldt forschte empirisch und multidisziplinär. Dazu gehörte es, dass er nicht nur sammelte und experimentierte, sondern alles, was sich vermessen ließ, auch wirklich vermaß: Er führte eine große Zahl von entsprechenden Instrumenten mit, bestimmte die geographische Länge, Breite und Höhe von Orten, den Erdmagnetismus, das Fallen und Streichen von Gesteinsschichten, Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit, Druck, Elektrizität, die Zusammensetzung der Luft, Wärme von Niederschlag und Gewässern und sogar die Bläue des Himmels. Besonders faszinierten ihn Vulkane und Erdbeben. Es gelang ihm auch, die lange vermutete Verbindung zwischen dem Orinoco und dem Amazonas nachzuweisen.1840 regte er erfolgreich an, ein weltweites Netz von Messstationen aufzubauen, um den Erdmagnetismus zu bestimmen.

HR 2 – Teil 4/8 – Humboldt als Kritiker von Kolonialismus und Sklaverei

Auf seinen Forschungsreisen wurde Humboldt mit den negativen Folgen des Kolonialismus und des Sklavenhandels konfrontiert. In seinen Tagebüchern, die nicht zur Veröffentlichung bestimmt waren, beschrieb er in drastischen Worten, was er gesehen hatte und was ihm erzählt worden war. Solange er in Amerika war, hielt er sich mit Äußerungen zurück. Aber danach ergriff er vehement Partei für die unterdrückten Menschen. In seinen beiden großen Berichten über Mexiko und Kuba prangerte er die koloniale Ausbeutung und vor allem die menschenverachtende Praxis des Sklavenhandels und des Umgangs mit versklavten Afrikanern an. Bis zu seinem Tod wurde er nicht müde, für ein Verbot der Sklaverei zu kämpfen.
