  1. After some absolute sweaty gameplay, I have finally beaten #Aleste 2 on the #MSX

Playing this game on Oni difficulty is not recommended in the slightest. Even on Hito difficulty the game is a challenge. Perhaps for those who are quite experienced with SHMUPs will find this would be reasonable breeze, but I often found myself in ridiculous death spirals at times and leaking lives because having no power-ups forces you to play aggressively evasive until you recover.

Thankfully, your dying explosion functions a bit like a bomb, allowing you to thin out some of the enemies and bullets on screen.

I swear, if it wasn't for weapon 6, which is a grenade style weapon that could neutralise certain enemy bullets your normal weapons couldn't, I probably would have not gotten anywhere near the end of this one.

The funniest part of the game, is that after beating the final boss, you given 50,000,000 points, which gives you about 60 lives!

  6. But how's the game Ishambard?!

    Solid, but brutal.
Some of the hardness is an emulation issue, certain controls requiring a keyboard.

Similar to the original game, you have your main gun and special weapon that can fire independently. The special has limited ammo which can be restocked by picking up the same special weapon, and it will also power-up. High level special weapons cause massive devastation, but dying once will reset them back to level one.

Unlike the original Aleste, special weapon pick-ups travel down the screen, as opposed to up them. This is a god send when the majority of these spawn in mid-way up the play field.

Thank goodness for infinite continues because it is super easy to get into a bit of a death loop in this game. Being low powered in some sections can turn the game into a bullet hell, and even cause the game to slow down.

So far, all stages in the game have given me hell, beating this one will be an absolutely crowning achievement.

  11. What better way to start the month with the latest #SHMUP that has been relentlessly beating me over the head

Years ago, I played the console #Aleste games, and they are all good. But I had neglected the #MSX games until now.
Aleste 1 is similar enough to the Master System version, but Aleste 2... Oh boy. This game is a contender.

It took some messing about with, as the original game was on multiple disks, and someone made a version which removes the disk swapping.

Aleste 2 is a direct sequel to Aleste 1 and sees Ellinor Waizen, daughter of Aleste 1 protagonist, fighting to avenge the death of her father and saving earth from the Vegant. A race of humanoids who evolved from plants and consume the life force from planets.

There is almost a weird horror tone in this game, as stages progress more of the Earth is overrun and corrupted by the Vegant forces.
Thank god we're flying over the landscapes, because I can't imagine what body horrors are down on the ground.

  16. Musha Aleste is my favourite shooter on the MegaDrive. And GG Aleste is a pretty competent vertical SHMUP on the GameGear. In the beginning it seems quite difficult, until you survive the first few rounds, max out your weapon, and the slowdown due to the MASSIVE amounts of sprites makes dodging the bullets much easier! :-D

  21. I finally got MSX emulation working on my Steam Deck.
It was a simple mistake of not having the BIOS folder set up correctly.

This does mean I can finally get around to playing the #Aleste games on the MSX; Aleste, Aleste 2 and Aleste Gaiden.

Now... I just need to mess about with some Sega CD nonsense, and I will have every current console Aleste game at my fingertips.

  30. So, whilst I try to figure out something to play next, I decided to revisit a game I hadn't quite finished fully yet.

Super Aleste or Space Megaforce's advanced difficulties were always quite daunting especially Wild/Lunatic difficulty, where enemies move faster, take more damage and when they die, launch a death bullet at you. Even certain obstacles launch a wave of bullets at you and it can get overwhelming pretty quickly.

Thankfully these bullets can be shot down with specific weapons (Laser and Power shots charge-up and beam), but it's not a perfect counter measure.

The real saving grace is infinite continues, allowing you to restart from a checkpoint or the start of the stage. It does become a bit of an exercise in patience, but the journey has been quite satisfying. I should probably revisit GG Aleste 2 and 3, as those games are also absolutely fantastic.

  40. I find it funny that my first three games beaten milestones on Retroachievements.org are all Aleste games.

That being said, is Power Strike 2 for Master System really an Aleste game? It's made by Compile and features similar mechanics to other games in the series.

The reason why I ask is this is because Power Strike 2 is just really bizarre, and with its 1930s setting, and somewhat steampunky vibes.

That being said, Robo Aleste also exists, and that has a feudal Japanese setting, with mecha.

This does give me an opportunity, however, to recommend people check out the Aleste games, especially if you like SHMUPs as they are a really solid set of games. Not that I need excuses to rave about Super Aleste or GG Aleste 3.

  48. I think enough time has passed since I last tooted anything #Aleste related.

Specifically, to gush about GG Aleste 3 on the #GameGear

Modern games on old hardware are a fascinating subject, and I should really should dive deeper into it.

Anyway. For #VGMWednesday, I present the track from stage 2 of GG Aleste 3,
    『Last Messiah』

This is probably my favourite track from this particular game, but the OST as a whole is pretty good. It really shows off the sound compabilities that the GameGear had.

If you like #shmups, you really should check out GG Aleste 3 and Aleste as a series, especially the GG games and Super Aleste on the SNES.
GG3, for me, was a tough but rewarding playthrough. It served up a decent challenge, but I am not a competent shmup player.

  53. So, I just want to appreciate the box art for MUSHA for a second. Both boxes look awesome.

So after playing through #Aleste on the GameGear and Master System. We have finally progressed to the #SegaGenesis (or #MegaDrive if you prefer) and boy, is this game wild. Unlike previous games. We are no longer piloting a ship but a full-blown mech suit, blasting our way through a futuristically feudal Japanese setting. The first boss is a Japanese castle on tank treads. It is all just absurdly awesome.

Possibly my only gripe with this game is that it does get visually overwhelming, I'd rather stay sufficiently whelmed. The game also has a rather frustrating affinity for homing missiles. Thankfully, your mech suit can take a hit and sacrifice its bonus weapon in the process.

It's definitely one I need to play through on the harder difficulty. Would be nice to get another #RetroAchievements mastery of an Aleste game under my belt.

  57. So, video games are weird. I think they are the only medium that can pivot wildly on setting/tone and can be met with a shrug (i say this with equal seriousness and sarcasm).

I say this because #Aleste / Power Strike 2 for #MasterSystem is set in the 1930s and has you fighting sky pirates! A long shot away from the pseudo futuristic setting of the original.

Power Strike 2 is hard, even on the normal difficulty, I hate to think how hard the two additional difficulties are! But what i will say is. It is quite a joy to play when it isn't murdering you.

The environments are incredibly beautiful when you get a chance to appreciate them. Powering up your weaponry is far less tedious than the first, with one button to fire all weapons, no ammo to worry about, and the second button to adjust your movement speed, which is probably more strategic than I gave it credit for.

I definitely encourage people to give this a look at!
