Russian anti-war activist #Aleksandr #Demidenko, who helped hundreds of Ukrainian refugees in the Belgorod region to return to Ukraine,

🔸died in custody🔸 last week, his lawyer told his family on April 8.

The 61-year-old activist, who openly protested Russia's invasion of Ukraine, was arrested in October.

He was initially sentenced to 10 days in jail for drinking alcohol in public.

Police later said they found an old grenade and two detonators for a grenade and a mine, all made during World War II, at Demidenko's house and charged him with illegal weapons possession.

A court in the city of Mytishchi near Moscow sentenced environmental activist #Aleksandr #Bakhtin to six years in prison on August 11 on a charge of distributing fake news about the Russian armed forces.

The charges stemmed from three posts about Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine in which Bakhtin wrote about Russian soldiers’ alleged #atrocities in the Ukrainian city of #Bucha, near Kyiv, and other places.

Bakhtin also directly accused Russian President Vladimir #Putin of plans to blockade Kyiv.

"Milashina's fingers have been broken, and she is sometimes losing consciousness. She has bruises all over her body," the group said on social media. It added that Nemov had been stabbed in the leg.

"It was a classic kidnapping.... They pinned our driver down, threw him out of his car, got in, bent our heads down, tied my hands, knelt me down there, and put a gun to my head," Milashina told Mansur Soltayev, a Chechen human rights official, as she lay in a hospital in Grozny shortly after the attack.

Milashina and Nemov had traveled to Chechnya to attend the sentencing by a court of #Zarema #Musayeva, the jailed mother of three self-exiled outspoken Chechen opposition activists, Ibragim, Abubakar, and Baisangur #Yangulbayev, all of whom have fled the country citing harassment from Chechen authorities over their online criticism of Kremlin-backed Chechen head Ramzan #Kadyrov.
