  1. #AlbertaElection2023 entirely ignoring #ClimateChange while #Alberta burned and #YYC experienced the thickest smoke of our entire existence was an omission so glaring it was reported all over the world. That's us making the wrong kind of news again & it took both of our major parties to do it. Speaks poorly about our perceived understanding or care about Climate's severity/urgency

  2. Mandatory climate policy around the #CarbonTax was again used as a political cudgel this election. Having survived quixotic constitutional challenges #AlbertaElection2023 could've been the time for a fulsome debate on provincial rather than federal control of Alberta's carbon tax revenues. That didn't happen.

  6. Couldn't agree more with this piece by Jeremy Appel.

"If you’re constantly attacking your opponent’s character but offering policies eerily similar to theirs, don’t expect to sway enough people to win an election. We’re electing politicians, not Saints."

  7. I don’t understand. But I’m going to start calling Albertans ‘Bertans, said like ‘Muricans.

Danielle Smith’s UCP has won the #alberta election. What now? Analyzing the results of a razor-thin race - The Globe and Mail apple.news/AgVXV-mo9T46BBf5hWo

  8. I’m sad to see the #Alberta election results. I feel Rachel Notley was the better choice. But that’s how #democracy works. We need to find a way to end the “us versus them” dialogue so prevalent during elections and build bridges that help all the people. #albertaelection2023 #cdnpoli

  9. For those upset with the results of the #AlbertaElection2023, let me offer some perspective from an Older Wiser Lesbian.

I wasn't allowed to get married less than 20 years ago. That passed by one vote.

30 years ago, I could be fired just for being gay. It was also widely believed that gay people automatically got AIDS.

Now us meagre 3% of what used to be called "Kinsey 6s" are joined by a whopping 25% of youth who no longer identify as "straight".

  10. Woke up this morning to see that Alberta is just fine with having a Q-Anon crazy person as Premier. Danielle Smith is unqualified to run a Wendy’s, but here she is - elected leader of a whole province. Unfortunately, this will just embolden the Buffalo Party fringe on the right in Saskatchewan as well. More battles with Ottawa on the way as Alberta pushes Western “sovereignty” and Saskatchewan dutifully follows along. #albertaelection2023 #alberta #saskatchewan

  11. I also as the annoying pro-PR type person that I am and wonder aloud "what if this election had some form of PR?"

Whenever I see maps like this, I ask a question like that. Especially considering in the 20s-50s Alberta DID have STV-PR. I have no doubt that in suburban and even rural areas had NDP supporters that feel unrepresented. Not sure how drastic the results would change, but my feelings on this grow stronger each election.

  12. I would like to take a moment to express my condolences to my fellow Canadians in Alberta. It's very frustrating to see the result (and I'm sure that's a huge understatement).

I will choose to be some what optimistic and point out as some have that NDP did at least grow ground, and shows a shift, if slight, of a trend towards rejecting growing right wing sentiments. Let's just hope that trend continues.

  14. The CBC is going to call it first.

Global is next by my livestream feed. But really, they were both seconds apart.

I'm going to sign off. Speeches are my least favourite part of election night.

It is going to be wild times ahead for Alberta and I'm not looking forward to it.

  15. The big story of the election is how Alberta is becoming even more divided around urban and rural lines.

  16. Lethbridge is a little oasis of orange in southern Alberta.

Jason Nixon gets the last laugh in his riding with the ridiculously long name.

Druh Farrell is trailing in Calgary-Bow (boo) but Calgary-Currie flips to the NDP's Janet Eremenko with Nicholas Milliken going down.

    #AlbertaElection2023

  17. It looks like Calgary-Elbow will flip to the NDP.

This is the riding where Danielle Smith refused to run and would not call a by-election to replace minister Doug Schweitzer after he stepped down in September.

    #AlbertaElection2023

  18. Jennifer Johnson wins decisively in her riding of Lacombe-Ponoka.

And Global is still showing her as UCP. She'll be back in caucus in no time despite her unbelievably hateful comments about trans kids.

  19. Janet Brown gets credit where it's due for her polling.

    #AlbertaElection2023

  20. It's looking like a UCP majority so I'll likely be packing it in soon. I wish I had better news.

The only question is what will happen in Calgary but even if the NDP makes big gains, they've had disappointing results in the "donut" communities outside of the big cities, especially in the Edmonton area.

Here's the latest update from Global.

  21. Apparently there's a problem with the tabulators not working. Well, that means it's going to be a long night. I'm going to bed.

  22. What is this intrigue? CBC is reporting problems with the vote tabulators.

    #AlbertaElection2023

  23. Meanwhile, the UCP is talking to the CBC trying to explain their support of Jennifer Johnson, whose anti-queer comments were so gross and disturbing that i'm not even going to mention them here.

  24. Alberta's most popular MLA Janis Irwin of the NDP is declared definitively reelected by CBC.

No word on whether Oregano will be joining her on stage for a victory speech.

    #AlbertaElection2023

  25. Diana Batten (NDP) a nurse has pulled ahead of Tyler Shandro (UCP) the former health minister and I'm so here for it.

    Very close race.
