In August 2001, Michael J. Ryan found a skull and postcranial fragments.
In 2007, Ryan formally named and described the fossil Albertaceratops nesmoi. He described it as the most basal centrosaurine.
In 2010, Ryan et al, thought they had found a bonebed in the Judith River Formation. Further study determined those were a different, but closely related species, Medusaceratops.

The only known fossil material of Albertaceratops was found in 2001. It was described formally in 2007 by Michael J. Ryan. He found it was one of the most basal centrosaurines.
Other specimens were thought to have been found in the Judith River Formation, but they were later revealed to be Medusaceratops instead.
