This 1910 #LewisWickesHine photo of #Albany #newsboys has been popping up, stripped of all information. I took a deeper dive to learn about boys who were out selling newspapers on the city streets at 10 o'clock at night. Each one saw trouble with the law, starting right around when this was taken. For some, that trouble continued their entire lives.

Chanced upon this ad for a 1920 film, combination of film and live stage show with "California Bathing Girls." Private school girl will inherit fortune if she remains unmarried 'til 21. She's secretly married to the gym teacher, has to hide baby from snooping principal's son. Hilarity ensures?

The film and stage show toured the East Coast, anyway. This ad was for the Clinton Square Theatre in Albany, NY.

On my #LocalHistory page, I have the story of #Albany's Drislane's, perhaps once the largest grocery store in the state. The landmark building stood from 1834 until 1972.
There were Pure Food shows, mail order groceries, and at least one championship coffee drinker.
As a bonus: there's the sudden appearance of Pine Street, an ancient little street that suddenly grew three sizes in 1981.

A now forgotten early #aviator and #vaudeville mind reader, Hope Eden, created an absolute sensation when she took a whirlwind shopping expedition in #Albany in 1919 – Taylor Swift might not get more attention.

Eden may have been the first entertainer to regularly travel from gig to gig in her own airplane – at a time when landings were made in fields.

A century ago, municipalities were very interested in establishing airports, primarily as business development. #Albany's claim to being the oldest municipal #airport starts with a former polo field in 1919, moves to riverside farmland in 1920, and then settles on a vast former Shaker farm in 1928. Albany Bicentennial Tablet 46 – a #marker honoring "Jewish Congregations," which I suppose was originally placed on this structure when it was Temple Beth Emeth. Haven't found the marker, but I did try to give a capsule history of the major #Jewish congregations in #Albany, including Albany's role in reform Judaism as the home of Rabbi Isaac Wise.

Albany, NY was essentially founded on the beaver trade – for fur, not as "medicine." Long after the beavers were gone, a local #SnakeOil salesman got into a tussle with the State of New York and ended up getting his beaver seized (and don't think I haven't considered "Beaver Seizure" as a band name).

The 40th of the Albany Bicentennial tablets, placed in 1886 in honor of the city's 1686 charter, commemorated Franklin Street, formerly Frelinghuysen. Franklin has lost some of its continuity, Rev. Frelinghuysen has been all but forgotten, and although the building it was placed on still stands, the bicentennial marker is gone.

This week on my #LocalHistory blog, I uncovered nothing and solved no mystery. For some reason, the 1886 #AlbanyNY Bicentennial Committee chose to honor a street that was barely a street then, only an alley now. The #HistoricalMarker went missing more than a century ago, and I personally know every person who knows where Dean Street is.

There are SO many snippets in my #localhistory folder for things I want to research. For example: did the E.J. Larrabee biscuit bakery in #Albany, NY invent animal crackers (or, as they called them, "menagerie biscuits")? And could I possibly find a copy of their illustrated biscuit dictionary?

Formerly the Albany Aerated Bread Company, Larrabee burned rather spectacularly in 1887, and it's not clear whether they reopened after that.

The #historicalmarker celebrating publisher Joel Munsell has been missing for more than a century. He did the most to record and preserve the history of the city of #Albany, and we commemorate him with: exactly nothing.

Without his work, particularly "The Annals of Albany," vast amounts of minutiae would have been lost.

Another local #history distraction – a news item about boys throwing rocks at a hot air balloon in #Albany NY in 1819. The balloonist was a French Revolution exile (Albany had others) who was also one of the area's earliest piano makers. I've written a lot about Albany's history as a piano-making city (all long gone, alas), but I never ran across the name of Joseph Peloubet before. Soooo, now there's more research to try to do on Monsieur Peloubet.

Point King Lighthouse, Albany, Western Australia. Built in 1857 and in use until 1911. The picture shows the ruins of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage; the llighthouse itself was an adjacent wooden tower with an oil-fired light. The tower was 5m high and the light was visible 19km away.

In 1886, #Albany NY celebrated the bicentennial of its charter with a series of #historicalmarkers, many of which still exist. One that does not marked the house where "Yankee Doodle" purportedly was written – and that may have been the only correct fact on the marker.

The house was nearly sold off brick by brick at the turn of the last century.
