  1. A $3.4b collapse exposes the mess of our housing industry
    By Alan Kohler

The collapse of Bathla is a disaster for the national housing supply and affordability project: its now-stalled pipeline of 14,000 apartments represents about 18.5 per cent of new housing stock to be built in NSW this year.

  6. As rising inequality demands reform, business is 'circling the wagons'
    By Alan Kohler

Business used the collapse of unions to suppress wages and oligopoly power to increase prices. Expecting it now — using AI — to fix declining productivity, rising inequality, generational anger and political polarisation is fanciful.

  7. Climate change and corruption are also driving up interest rates
    By Alan Kohler

Typically, bond rates rise when an economy is doing well and inflation appears to be moving up. But something much deeper and more structural is currently going on.

  8. The 30-year policy collision behind Australia's housing crunch
    By Alan Kohler

How two sets of policies, housing and migration, compounded on each other over 30 years and created the housing affordability crisis we have today.

  9. Totally agree with #alankohler that we should have government run #childcare centres; get rid of the subsidy to pay for it.

How good would it be to have one drop off at your local state school?

  10. We're back to two competing superpowers and China is pulling ahead
    By Alan Kohler

When it comes to AI, Australia is a spectator at a UFC cage fight between the United States and China, except the spectators are inside the cage with the combatants.

  11. @ecoscore
That was great! Thanks for the recommendation. Alan Kohler is a national treasure & Justin Wolfers worth listening to; I especially liked his arguments on immigration = innovation (child of 2 immigrants myself) & his positive admiration of Australia. It really is past time to lose, & to stop acting out on that cultural cringe!

The frightening thing was his costing of the US Presidency at ~$2b and profitable at that price - since est. that Thump made ~$8b last year (in bribes & corruption, not trades, which are chickenshit by comparison - such a small man). In Australia we need to tighten up the money flow potentials for that to happen here. No one - person or group - should be able to buy a Presidency, PM-ship or Premier-ship.

  14. @troberts I generally find #AlanKohler informative, quirky and entertaining on economics. But find him enthusiastically ignorant on AI. Unfortunately people will trust him on AI as they have trusted him on economics. At least today he admitted “the technology is way above my pay grade”. #AUSEcon

  15. The genAI boosting continues.

Reads more and more hysterical and fear based to me.

    ABC publishing industry propaganda.

These garbage machines are still telling me "A" on one simple search and "A prime" on minimally altered search terms..

  17. Cryptocurrency just got a boost from the US government with its first federal law regulating 'stablecoins'. Supporters – including the US President, who could personally profit – say it’ll help mainstream crypto. But as Alan Kohler reports, central banks aren’t happy.

  18. #Superannuation was meant to help people save for retirement, but 40 years on it's become a tax dodge for the wealthy. It's now set to cost taxpayers more than the Age Pension.

  19. Greg Jericho (in The Guardian) concludes with:

“Right now, the government is choosing to deliver $50bn a year to the richest 10% of Australians for no real, discernible public good that benefits the nation. Maybe that deserves a bit more attention than we give predictions of budget estimates which will soon be forgotten and likely be wrong.”

Come on #AlboPM what are you waiting for? Christmas?

I guess I have now confessed my deep regards for #GregJericho’s economic nous. Ah well, he deserves it. He is in the same basket as #AlanKohler in good company.
