“We just want the bare minimum to survive and here in al-Mawasi we don’t even have that,”
“Even for water, we wait for hours just to get a single bucket.”
“We are piled on top of each other in a single tent – me, my husband, our six children, and my husband’s elderly parents – 10 people in a small tent. There’s no room to sleep in that cramped space … There’s no privacy.”

Conditions have been described as beyond dire, crowded, and under-resourced even before the latest mass displacements. Many Palestinians who have been forced to flee Gaza City say they are unable to find space to pitch their tents. While the Israeli army has been telling residents of Gaza City – under intense military assault – to move to al-Mawasi, that area itself has been attacked multiple times by Israeli forces.

What to know about al-Mawasi, the so-called ‘safe zone’ in Gaza
The al-Mawasi area in southern Gaza, near Khan Younis and Deir el-Balah, is one of the most overcrowded areas in a landscape devastated by nearly two years of Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
Al-Mawasi, designated by the Israeli army as a “safe zone”, is an area of approximately 41sq km (15.83sq miles) lacking critical infrastructure and services.

“The forcibly displaced are subjected to direct targeting and killing both inside the camps and when attempting to leave them, constituting a blatant violation of all humanitarian and international laws.” -
Israel displacing Palestinians to ‘concentration camps’ in al-Mawasi
Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel is forcibly displacing Palestinians under the threat of air strikes to the overcrowded “concentration camps” in the southern area of al-Mawasi.
The ministry warned that al-Mawasi lacks the basic necessities of life, including water, food, health services and is an area where illnesses spread dangerously.

About 800,000 people live in the al-Mawasi areas of the Khan Younis and Rafah governorates, according to the office. Israel has designated it as a “safe zone” but, according to the Government Media Office, has attacked it at least 109 times, killing more than 2,000 people.

Israel designated al-Mawasi a “safe zone” in October 2023, using leaflets, social media, and phone calls to tell people to move there.Israel bombed the area several times after that, claiming Hamas officials were hiding among the displaced. The Palestinian group has rejected this claim.
The biggest attack occurred on July 13, 2024, when 90 people were killed and at least 300 were wounded. -
Is al-Mawasi a ‘safe zone’, as Israel claims?
Israel is continuing to issue orders to force Palestinians to move southward to the al-Mawasi area of Khan Younis, which it designated a “humanitarian” or “safe” zone.
But since the war started, the area has never been safe for Palestinians. Here’s a brief look at what the area and its inhabitants have endured since October 7, 2023.

Israeli army attacks area near Red Crescent hospital
Palestinian media are reporting multiple casualties resulting from Israeli attacks on the al-Mawasi area in Khan Younis, where the Palestine Red Crescent has a field hospital.
The Israeli army designated the area a safe zone in the early days of its war on Gaza, but it routinely attacks the many tents housing displaced people there.

They know that walking into al-Mawasi is like walking into a death trap where they are going to be killed within days, weeks, hours. It highlights the vulnerability of displaced people who have been displaced multiple times since the start of the war to the point that they have no other options other than staying in their homes in the central areas.Hani Mahmoud

Palestinians left with zero options after new evacuation threat
Palestinians say they have nowhere else to go and there is no space because most western areas or al-Mawasi are full of people and tents with no extra space.
They are left with zero options.
Palestinians here are saying they refuse to leave and are going to stay in their houses because even the areas designated as safe by the Israeli army have been targeted.

The so-called “safe zones”, including al-Mawasi in Khan Younis, are routinely attacked by Israel despite the army forcing Palestinians to move to those areas. -

Al-Mawasi has become a killing box for desperate families
More and more families in multiple generations being wiped out in one instant.
In particular, al-Mawasi in the west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza has evolved into a killing box, a death trap for the already displaced and traumatised people.

About 90 percent of Rafah has received forced evacuation orders to Al-Mawasi. This is a sandy stretch of land without necessities, such as water or electricity. Palestinians have already sought refuge there during the war.
At least 50,000 Palestinians currently reside in Rafah.

#Palestine / Israeli Airstrike Kills at Least 20 in Gaza's Humanitarian Zone
An Israeli airstrike hit a densely populated tent encampment in #Gaza's Al-Mawasi area, a designated humanitarian zone, killing at least 20 people and wounding several others.
The incident occurred in an area repeatedly struck despite its designation as safer for civilians and despite the lack of adequate resources within the zone. The reported death toll could not be independently verified.
Palestinian sources report widespread destruction and describe the scene as a "fireball."
#Israel claims the strike targeted #Hamas militants, citing secondary explosions as evidence of weaponry in the area, while acknowledging efforts to mitigate civilian harm.
