» Es ist ein Phänomen, das vermutlich alle Menschen kennen, die sich mit Digitalisierung oder Klimawandel beschäftigen: #Akrasia. Mit diesem Begriff wurde schon im alten Griechenland eine faszinierende menschliche Verhaltensweise diskutiert, die später etwas schräg auch als Willensschwäche bezeichnet wurde. Heute wird von kognitiver Dissonanz, irrationalem Verhalten oder dem berühmten inneren Schweinehund gesprochen. Akrasia ist „Handeln wider besseren Wissens“. Ein schönes, weil sehr emotionales, Beispiel ist das Fleischparadox: Die Mehrheit der Menschen ist gegen Tierleid, verursacht es aber durch das eigene Konsumverhalten.
Wie handeln Menschen wider besseren Wissens und halten sich trotzdem für klug und korrekt? Warum lehnen wir beispielsweise das Unternehmen Meta ab, bleiben aber trotzdem bei dessen Messenger WhatsApp? Willkommen im Wechselparadox, dem Fleischparadox der Digitalisierung. «

Cuando oí Akrasia por primera vez no me gustó... pero ha sido pasar de las 2 primeras canciones y he cambiado de idea.

This Friday, I am going to start #teaching a four-week #lecture series “Is mental conflict possible? Akrasia as a touchstone of ancient moral philosophies” at the Department of #Philosophy in #Oxford. The course covers treatments of #akrasia (weakness of will / lack of control / incontinence) in #AncientPhilosophy (Greek and Roman traditions), covering #Socrates, #Plato, #Aristotle, and (as always, if there is time) the #Stoics.

Question: what interesting treatments of this phenomenon in other philosophical traditions / the later #HistoryOfPhilosophy could I read up on to also mention to my students to more fully introduce and motivate the course?
