#AkaiForce users : this is happening! There are now DIY ports add-ons of #FOSS plugins. 😮 It is based on a similar project for #abletonmove ( https://schwung.dev/ ) and runs on top of the #MockbMod Bootstrap layer. https://github.com/sd88me/force-shadow
I am eager to find some time to try it out... Exciting times for DIY Music Tech. Less so for proprietary Music Tech biz.. ( see my previous note about the similar #Bitwig situation below) -

Phewww... some crazy stuff has been happening in the music tech world lately.
As vibecoding democratizes software engineering, it was only a matter of time before powerful AI got used to decompile proprietary software. In other words, with very little DSP knowledge but enough AI tokens, reverse engineering almost any software is becoming accessible to the masses.
As found on some subreddits and reported by Bitwig power user and YouTube figure @[email protected], some people have hacked into the application code of #AbletonLive and #BitwigStudio. They've created new devices, added enhanced features, cross ported devices from Ableton to Bitwig, etc. Before you get too excited: this isn't for everyone, as it seems you must patch the software again every time to use these mods.
Obviously this breaches the Terms of Service, and very likely IP rights and whatnot. The people behind these hacks say they never redistribute proprietary code, so in their view no IP is violated. I'm no jurist, so I don't know.
That said, none of this feels driven by bad intentions. It looks more like passionate Bitwig users who want more stuff, faster, and turn to DIY to get it. There's something friendly about it, which makes it hard to have a clear cut opinion. But then why not just use external plugins?
From what I can see on my Bitwig skewed side of the interwebs, Bitwig GmbH is the most affected here. The only Ableton case I've read about is the Glue Compressor being ported to Bitwig. Also worth mentioning: Ableton gave its users a similar playground with Max for Live long ago. Anyway, as far as I know, Bitwig hasn't publicly reacted yet.
But what can you do? 🤷 One thing is for sure: it won't disappear. You either facilitate it (give it a frame and hope to keep some control over your software) or you fight it. Either way, it will cost Bitwig extra resources they surely didn't plan for. Third option: don't react, just observe and use it as a testing ground for ideas. But how long can you stay neutral? When is it too late?
The broader long term picture looks grim for DSP developers, though. If every AI user gets the memo that they can not only modify or fork existing software but build a complete solution for their own needs from scratch, what's the future of music tech as a whole? Even hardware: if I'm not happy with the software on, let's say, my #AkaiForce (true story btw.), with enough time and tokens I might even program my own. Hmmm.
And even broader: any software can be reverse engineered, including in industries far more critical than music production (finance, databases, defense...). To be fair, that has probably always been true in the computer security and intelligence world, with or without AI. But now it's just obvious to everyone. Scary! -

An unofficial community collection of free oscillator content prepared for MPC 3.9 and Force 3.9, taking advantage of the new oscillator source feature for keygroups and drum programs. Reported to include the Expert Sleepers Disting oscillators.

A new update just dropped for the MPC range of samplers, bringing wavetable OSC to the Drum and Keygroups.
As an Akai Force owner, I have never owned a piece of Hardware that, since I bought it in around 2020, have developed so much. It's insane.
I'm several updates behind, knowing what functions they bring, so it always feels like a complete new an updated instrument. Quite impressive!

I worked on a new original track for the first time in at least three years today. It felt really good to get lost in the groove again.
Might have gotten a little too lost though... Forgot to drink any water and gave myself a wicked headache.
But the track has really solid bones, so I think I'll keep working on it over the holidays and see if I can come up with something worth releasing.

First day back in the #MusicStudio in something like 2 years (working on a project for my wife, @likeawednesday, who performs #aerial routines set to #InstrumentalMusic), and I must admit, I've gotten more than a little rusty. 😬
I'm currently working on #recording a #guitar track that replicates the vocal melody from a song, and then splicing that together with the #instrumental mix of that song. The end result will sound and feel very similar to the original, with all the same melodic content, but none of the lyrics.
Well, I just had a *perfect* take, from start to finish. Absolutely #NailedIt. Felt like a damn #rockstar. Looked down at the #AkaiForce to check out my handiwork...
It wasn't recording. 😂
I figure this must be a sign from my #muse, telling me to give my brain (and fingers) a break, have some lunch, #meditate for a bit, and then come back to crush this thing once and for all.

@linesofsilence @ambv (2/6)
1. I use #AbletonLive w/ the #AkaiForce as a controller to capture performances in the studio. I'm using a quick-to-audio approach for my #synths, so even though I might record MIDI first, I'm going to have audio before the session is over (w/ knob twiddling, of course!).

I was REALLY hoping that the 3.2 firmware update for the Akai Force would contain the ability to use time signatures that aren't 4/4. It's absolutely unbelievable to me that they would make this incredible piece of hardware with no time signature changes possible. Yet...they did. And they have made massive, game-changing updates over and over, without adding this very basic feature. Is this just an Akai thing? #akai #akaiforce #electronicmusic
