My position is the same as Emily Bender’s: LLMs are stochastic parrots. Getting a sensible, true answer from them is nothing more than a roll of the dice. People don’t bother to check if the answer they’ve received is correct because, hey, this is Artificial Intelligence! No it is not.

It’s not just this part of the tech world that’s full of it. When I was covering book publishing, it was so thick that most people couldn’t see the other side of it. When people think there’s money to be made, a gold rush mania sets in. There’s been a bit of that with AI wearables too. But the reckoning — it’s otherwise called reality — has already begun and there will be few actually getting to market. And even fewer surviving once in the market.

There really isn’t much go on here besides this quote:

“I do think that these devices that see the world, that you wear on your body, on your person — I think that those combined with the AI will be very valuable. It can do image recognition, it can tell you [and] talk to you about what’s going on. I think that’s a fascinating place that we’ll go.”

This is the same company that discontinued the best pocketable form factor for AI: the Surface Duo. Their products tend to die faster than the ones from Google. And I still recall what Steve Jobs once said:

That still applies. It it didn’t, Microsoft would be announcing Surface Duo 4.

“The Worst Product Ever” Admired

“The ‘worst product ever’ has a lot to admire”

But barring its practical limitations, the concept behind the AI Pin was a brilliant exercise in design. It is a step in the right direction when it comes to personal technology being designed with user wellbeing in mind.

The question becomes: Will those who reviewed and (justifiably) condemned the Humane AI Pin review it again after the CosmOS 1.2 update? It’s now where it should have been at launch and is more indicative of what Humane was aiming at. It should get a second chance.
