After two weeks at home, I have about the shortest possible trip to the West Coast coming up: Qualcomm is hosting a “6G Leadership Day” event in La Jolla, Calif., on Wednesday and covering travel costs for invited journalists. I will, of course, include a disclosure of that in everything I file for PCMag from there.

8/18/2026: Consumer Cellular Taps Airalo for eSIM International Connectivity for Subscribers, PCMag

The fact that Consumer Cellular subscribers can’t take advantage of this eSIM promotion if they bought a phone from that service on an installment-payment plan made this a little more interesting to me.

When I wrote this, it wasn’t clear how SpaceX would get Starship’s second stage from Christmas Island to Texas. Now it looks like they’ve outsourced that work to the semi-submersible heavy-lift carrier Forte, operated by the Dutch maritime-services firm Boskalis.

When I sent a question in to AA’s PR department requesting clarification on details like the sizes of the screens and whether the touted personalization features would include targeted advertising or the ability to set favorite movie and TV shows for future flights, I did not expect to get a reply less than two hours later saying the airline couldn’t provide those details because it needed to pick a technology vendor first. I also didn’t expect to scoop travel writers much more versed in AA like Ben Schlappig or Gary Leff, but that’s what happened.

The Arabic-language news channel had me on via Zoom, overdubbed as usual, to comment about a robotics conference going on in China (for a peek at that, see this brief report from Al Jazeera English). My main point: While the Trump administration can make it difficult for Chinese manufacturers of robots to sell into the U.S., there’s almost nothing it can do to stop the rest of the world from doing business with China.

I missed this poll published by Heatmap News the day it came out, but after seeing enough AI boosters on X still angsting out over it, I decided the story had some legs. The attention that this climate-news site’s survey has kept getting leads me to think that I made the right call.

I'm still not upgrading mine - fingers crossed this will be easy with #SailfishOS by next year as all being well I'll have switched to the new #Jolla phone by then 🤞

My requirements are at least 10 days of internet connectivity and the higher data cap the better but ideally has (at least) basic unlimited data beyond the given limit. Stuck between getting any of these options I have found atm:

- #Airalo (6.50 USD/~27.98 MYR): 2GB TOTAL (seems incredibly little), 15 days

- Airalo (8.50 USD/~36.59 MYR): 3GB TOTAL (still little, no?), 30 days

- Airalo (11.50 USD/~49.50 MYR): 5GB TOTAL (ok, I guess?), 30 days

- Airalo (18.00 USD/~77.48 MYR): 10GB TOTAL, 30 days

Data usage would probably be more comprised of things like a lot of social media (i.e. #Instagram for my partner), messaging, a little bit of internet calls (i.e. #WhatsApp, #Facetime), and probably a ton of misc things you'd need in #Japan like #Google Maps/Translate, browsing, etc.

I've a ton of mobile data locally and rarely use them cos I'd be on WiFi instead most of the time, so honestly not sure how much data we'd need.

Bah. Looks like #airalo have recently switched providers for the Japan #eSIM cards (now using NTT Docomo Softbank apparently), meaning I can’t top up mine (which uses KDDI). Oh well, I guess buying another data-only eSIM isn’t too much hassle…

Other than that, this has been an excellent service and I’ll never go back to trying to make do with WiFi in the accommodation and pot-luck out and about in cafes, stations, shopping malls etc.

Bah. Looks like #airalo have recently switched providers for the Japan #eSIM cards (now using NTT Docomo Softbank apparently), meaning I can’t top up mine (which uses KDDI). Oh well, I guess buying another data-only eSIM isn’t too much hassle…

Other than that, this has been an excellent service and I’ll never go back to trying to make do with WiFi in the accommodation and pot-luck out and about in cafes, stations, shopping malls etc.

Ještě jedna technická poznámka k tomu #Airalo.

Pokud máte například do firmy omezený přístup na některé služby na úrovni geolokace, tak vězte, že to, že jste v Turecku a máte v #Airalo zobrazeného tureckého operátora, není ani zdaleka pravda, že se připojujete z této země.

Svoji aktuální IP adresu najdete třeba na: https://whatsmyip.com, kde je uvedená i země, ke které adresa patří. Ta se pak musí povolit na firewallu.

V mém případě to bylo Nizozemsko.

V Turecku jsem na data použil eSIM od Airalo a tady je několik informací:
a) před nákupem eSIM si ověřte, že vás telefon je podporuje. U iphone jsou to všechny telefony minimálně 5 let zpátky

b) eSIM je potřeba koupit ve chvíli, kdy ještě máte přístup na internet. Ideálně tedy doma, nebo na hotelové WiFi. Já to udělal týden předem a k aktivaci došlo po prvním připojení na tureckou mobilní síť

c) Vodafone mi po příletu poslal SMS, že jsem vyčerpal všechna mobilní data (žádná jsem pro tuto lokalitu neměl) a poslal mi skvělou nabídku 250,- za 1MB. Přesto jsem trochu zpanikařil a ověřil si, že opravdu na účtu nic nemám

d) můj iphone mne vyzval k výběru připojení pro FaceTime a iMessage, vybral jsem novou eSIM, ale ptal se mne na to během týdne vícekrát. Možná kvůli připojování telefonu na hotelovou wifi

e) po prvním připojení telefon spotřebuje docela dost dat (u mne asi 40MB), jak se oživují všechny služby. Při normálním používání by měl 1TB na týden stačit.

f) nejvíc dat sežerou mapy (u Apple map lze stáhnout mapa pro offline použití, to se hodí). Pak samozřejmě mail a všechno, kde jsou obrázky, tzn Instagram, X, FB, podle toho, co používáte

g) po chatu s podporou Airalo je správné nastavení iMessage: v zahraničí odškrtnout telefonní číslo v Nastavení -> Zprávy -> Odesílání a příjem, po návratu na domácí síť zase zapnout

What I will look for in the Phone (2) after my experience using the #Nothing Phone (1):

- The Phone (1)'s camera was decent, but its "focus" is garbage. 99% of my pictures with the camera only had whatever's at the center to be in focus while everything else around it are noticeably blurry, especially if they contain texts. I've never had a phone camera that does this even with my oldest of #iPhone (s).

- I was surprised the Phone (1) didn't have e-Sim support. The use of e-Sim is so common now here in my country, and also when I travel. Not having e-Sim was super inconvenient and means I couldn't use services such as #Airalo. Since I switched to the Phone (1) from my older iPhone 11, and my sim was already an e-Sim at that point, I had to go to my telco and switch my sim back to a physical sim to use the Phone (1).

- The Phone (1) was buttery smooth for the most part, except whenever I'm driving. Consistently, every time I connect my Phone (1) to my car's bluetooth and have both #Google Maps and #Spotify running, the phone would lag to a crawl/halt. Each tap or action from that point onwards would no kidding take almost a minute or more. This issue isn't present in any of my iPhones, and as far as I know does not occur in most other #Android phones either.

If anyone is going to be travelling soon, I would highly recommend getting an e-sim through Airalo.
