U.S. commentators are projecting U.S. AI philosophy onto China.
China is not simply lagging or secretly sprinting ahead of the U.S., it is optimizing for a different set of outcomes. Chinese AI firms are not pursuing AGI as an end in itself. Many U.S. AI firms are.
