  1. Cikap-kamuy was considered a god of plenty who, importantly, made sure that rituals were being followed properly.
    His central myth also established (for the Ainu) the mountain jay and crow as birds of ill omen, and the dipper as a symbol of good fortune.

  2. Unseen Japan: Hokkaido University Apologizes for a Century of Ainu Remains Research. “On July 27, 2026, Hokkaido University issued its first-ever proper apology for a prewar research program. The medical school collected and studied more than 1,000 sets of Ainu remains. The university expressed that the work ‘deeply wounded the dignity of the Ainu people.'”

  4. Forgot my wife got me this notebook during our visit to the National #Ainu Museum in #Upopoy. Its design is based on a embroidery on a mantari (waist apron) found in the museum. It's believed mantari is derived from the Japanese word for apron, 前垂れ (maedare).

    If this isn't the perfect place to jot down my thoughts on aynu itak, I don't know what is.

  5. Unseen Japan: Ainu Group Demands Return of 279 Remains Held by Japan’s Government. “On May 8, 2026, an Indigenous Ainu group from Hokkaido filed Japan’s first lawsuit of its kind, demanding that the national government return 279 ancestral skeletal remains to their descendants. The remains in question are stored at the state-run Upopoy Memorial Site, located just outside Upopoy National […]

  7. Excellent interview with Joe Watkins about his new book “Indigenizing Japan: Ainu Past, Present, and Future” by @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social. I learned about Shakushain’s Revolt. Upopoy is the only National Museum I have not been to. Gonna get this book! 📚

  8. In 2020, Ghost of Tsushima gave life to an oft-overlooked slice of Japanese history. But in the new Ghost of Yotei, familiar samurai action-adventure thrills don’t quite live up to its new setting. japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/10/ #life #digital #videogames #ghostofyotei #hokkaido #ghostoftsushima #samurai #ainu

  10. "The #Ainu, an #indigenous people of Japan, have a distinct culture, language, and history that set them apart from the dominant Japanese population. Historically inhabiting #Hokkaido, #Sakhalin, the #KurilIslands, and parts of northern #Honshu, the Ainu lived as hunters, gatherers, and fishers, deeply connected to nature."

  11. The #KurilIslands are also the home of the #Indigenous #Ainu people!

    "The four volcanic islands, known in Russia as the Kurils, stretch between Kamchatka and the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

    "The islands were captured by the Soviet Union from Japan in the closing days of World War II. Japan asserts territorial rights to the islands it calls the Northern Territories, and the dispute has kept the countries from signing a peace treaty

    "The islands have a population of about 20,000, and the local economy is based on fishing. The Russian military has bolstered its presence in the area, refurbishing a Soviet-era air base and other outposts."

  12. #Listening to Sakhalin, a 2010 album by Oki Dub Ainu Band, which;

    "... features Tonkori, the traditional stringed instrument of the Karafuto Ainu in a band setting with drums, bass, keyboard and heavy dub sound."

    I presume some of the songs, like Bekabeka, are in an Ainu language too. Like a blend of Japanese and Pacific triangle languages, maybe even a little like some South American languages I've heard bits of.

  13. Great write-up from the #BBC about #language preservation efforts in #Japan for the Indigenous language #Ainu, which has a dwindling speaker population.
