  1. A group of Ainu indigenous people in Hokkaido has started a lawsuit demanding that the remains of 279 Ainu ancestors held by a state facility be returned to their descendants. japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/05/ #japan #hokkaido #ainu #indigenouspeople

  2. Excellent interview with Joe Watkins about his new book “Indigenizing Japan: Ainu Past, Present, and Future” by @newbooksnetwork.bsky.social. I learned about Shakushain’s Revolt. Upopoy is the only National Museum I have not been to. Gonna get this book! 📚

  3. In 2020, Ghost of Tsushima gave life to an oft-overlooked slice of Japanese history. But in the new Ghost of Yotei, familiar samurai action-adventure thrills don’t quite live up to its new setting. japantimes.co.jp/life/2025/10/ #life #digital #videogames #ghostofyotei #hokkaido #ghostoftsushima #samurai #ainu

  4. Cikap-kamuy was considered a god of plenty who, importantly, made sure that rituals were being followed properly.
His central myth also established (for the Ainu) the mountain jay and crow as birds of ill omen, and the dipper as a symbol of good fortune.

  5. "The #Ainu, an #indigenous people of Japan, have a distinct culture, language, and history that set them apart from the dominant Japanese population. Historically inhabiting #Hokkaido, #Sakhalin, the #KurilIslands, and parts of northern #Honshu, the Ainu lived as hunters, gatherers, and fishers, deeply connected to nature."

  6. The #KurilIslands are also the home of the #Indigenous #Ainu people!

"The four volcanic islands, known in Russia as the Kurils, stretch between Kamchatka and the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

"The islands were captured by the Soviet Union from Japan in the closing days of World War II. Japan asserts territorial rights to the islands it calls the Northern Territories, and the dispute has kept the countries from signing a peace treaty

"The islands have a population of about 20,000, and the local economy is based on fishing. The Russian military has bolstered its presence in the area, refurbishing a Soviet-era air base and other outposts."

"... features Tonkori, the traditional stringed instrument of the Karafuto Ainu in a band setting with drums, bass, keyboard and heavy dub sound."

I presume some of the songs, like Bekabeka, are in an Ainu language too. Like a blend of Japanese and Pacific triangle languages, maybe even a little like some South American languages I've heard bits of.

“The remains of the #Ainu people - donated by Scottish anthropologist Dr Neil Gordon Munro - were held in the university's anatomy museum.

“Dr Munro lived and died among the Ainu while studying their culture in northern #Japan.”

  11. “…it would behoove the Japanese State to officially recognize the colonial nature of the annexation of Hokkaido, as well as to simultaneously acknowledge collective elements of language revitalization and reclamation such as socioeconomic standing and status of language and culture.”

This would be a real step toward supporting the Ainu of Hokkaido.

  12. Spurred by colonialist propaganda that called his people "a dying race," Iboshi Hokuto spent his short life in service to his belief that "only the Ainu could save the Ainu." Learn more about his efforts to preserve Ainu culture and traditions in our latest.

  17. I'm noticing some problems fetching things from search, searches that appear to fetch something but don't produce the results, results missing, problems finding all results for hashtags, even things i know exist.

Adding precise link URL address in to search, says fetching yet produces no result.

  18. Umeko Ando

Japanese folk singer in North Japan
This Ainu culture is important on the continent of Hokkaido, and its past history and culture are somewhat similar to that of Sámi folklore on music in the peninsula
It is characterized with using a stringed instrument 🪕sounds of like a harp
