We know the scurge of "AI" scraping bots. But it has become almost impossible to tell the difference between scraping bots and pentest bots. This is from a domain I purchased months ago and put something on late on the 26th. 3 humans including me know the domain and I guarantee the two others have not visited more than once (which was out of sheer politeness).
Look at this specific session, this is just a blitz probe, none of those URLs actually exist. The sheer volume is astounding. It's a Go application sitting behind a Caddy reverse proxy (both performing admirably) which reports the usage to Umami, which is what the screenshots are from.

I’m coming across way too many broken Cloudflare turnstile and Anubis installations.
If you want to block bots make sure you don’t block humans as well. The bots won’t, but the humans will go somewhere else. -

My PineNote blog posts were linked to from the main body of a discussion thread on Hacker News but due to the consistent and prolific AI scraping it's barely a blip on my traffic. Remember when humans used to hug sites to death? In the old days this would absolutely stick out.
The good news is a human emailed me and asked me for my experience one year in and that was nice (which is also how I found out about the HN post). I'll share my response below until I get around to fleshing out a blog post from it:
I should absolutely do a write-up a year in. I'll give you the highlights:
- I lost my original PineNote and after a few months of trying to get it back, I ended up getting a replacement, which should say something all in itself.
- I wish the device was a little bit smaller and lighter, but I have gotten used to it.
- I use it as a single function device at a time, mostly writing or reading, very occasional computing.
- However, I on a month-long trip and I only brought along my work laptop and the PineNote instead of bringing a personal laptop. I can do all the personal computing that I need on the PineNote and my phone. See my setup here: https://shom.dev/posts/20250406_a-pinenote-only-5-day-weekend/
- I wish Pine64 would update their images with the kernel optimization created by the community member hrdl, they do link to it from their official docs.
- There is also an interesting project called QuillOS, which provides a nice interface to the whole system, but it's not ready for primetime on PineNote.

" 'Welp, that happened faster than I predicted,' #MatthewPrince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare, one of the largest internet hosting services, wrote Thursday on X.
“Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027,” he continued, “but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history.”
"The rise is attributed to the continued proliferation of AI agents, largely autonomous programs that use tools that collaborate with high-level programs and data, with little human feedback.
"Cloudflare, which has a feature to display bot versus human-generated search requests, says 57.4% of requests are now initiated by bots, compared with 42.6% coming from humans.
"Humans might browse five websites before making a purchase, however, while an AI service might browse 5,000 websites."

Attaque crawlers IA en cours sur le serveur gayfr.online : 98% des challenges #Anubis sont rejetés (donc sont des bots), plus de 800 000 requêtes sur la semaine.
Du coup aucun impact sur les performances ni la disponibilité. Il reste juste un bot vietnamien malin qui passe sous les radars et interroge le service RSS avec plusieurs secondes ou minutes d'intervalle. Pas gênant mais je lui réglerai son compte.

I appreciate the wise minds that have jumped into my thread over the past 24 hours.
It's amazing to see the variety of tools and attitudes towards the problem. The more I talk it through and hear from other folks, the more I feel that shutting the door is ultimately a self-own. If I want humans to see my website, I need to focus on making that as simple and unfettered as possible.
I have lots of things I could be doing better for my fellow humans. The trackers from Google and FB alone are my major concern for me. There is also a trade off between being searchable at all, versus blocking the scrapers and removing the trackers.
Any tech "solution" is ultimately imperfect. I wish this was a simpler equation. It does not feel like a "nuance" situation, rather a "you get screwed either way" situation.

So at the bottom, you’ll see the number of bots blocked on sight (red), the number of visits that need to verify the “I’m not a robot” page (orange), the percentage that succeed (meaning they aren’t bots, in yellow), and finally the number of accepted human visits (green).
What’s interesting is that the percentage of bots varies throughout the week but remains very high (between 65% and 96% depending on the time). That’s huge! They attack in swarms, just like a pain in the ass…
That justifies the efforts made to protect against them.

Ce qui est intéressant c'est que le % de bots varie dans la semaine mais reste très important (entre 65% et 96% selon les moments). C'est énorme ! Ils attaquent en escadrille, comme les emmerdes...
Ça justifie les efforts faits pour s'en protéger.

Est-ce que les bots #IA sont une réalité ? Voici les chiffres du jour pour les sites GayFR.Online...
Sur une semaine, 51 700 robots bloqués immédiatement.
Sur la même semaine, 221 000 visites ont eu la page de vérification Anubis.
Sur celles-ci, seulement 4% ont passé la validation.
Sur la même semaine, 18 200 visites sont acceptées et identifiées comme humaines (ni robots ni fédération).
Ça fait quand même un paquets de bots et 96% (en moyenne sur les dernières 24 h) qui n’ont pas passé la validation. Sachant que ce chiffre varie chaque jour.
Quel gaspillage de ressources ! Quelle ampleur de tentative de vols de contenus ! Quelle empreinte environnementale ! C’est atterrant.
