3/3 Same week the essay landed, a UK government adviser's "agreed safeguards" arrangement over an Anthropic conflict of interest collapsed in five days once someone with a select committee behind them actually asked about it. So which is it: a coordinated pause, or a coordinated stall for time? https://haunted.lighthouse.co.im/articles/not-inevitable-but-sooner-than-prepared-for/

SOURCE: SOCIALPSYCHOLOGY.ORGTITLE: Senators From Both Parties Question OpenAI on Breach of AI Startup
Source: PBS News Hour
Lawmakers worried about the existential risk posed by artificial intelligence demanded information from OpenAI on Thursday with separate queries that underscored concerns about the technology's potential to elude human control. Senator Josh Hawley launched an investigation Thursday into OpenAI for its artificial intelligence system hacking into another AI company on its own, and Senator Chris Van Hollen called on OpenAI to cooperate in a safety...

If you #hateAi put a minimum effort into learning the basics...
Least you sound like the Woods folk
...unless you're happy in just talking about fierce monster Ai's around bonfires to other Wood folk."#LLM creates dependency on commercial inference providers, who can cut you off at any time ("first hit is free" etc)"
Yeah, true, if the only time you tried 'chatbot' was V3.0, you decided it's crap, and swore a bloodoath to never use a clanker again.
Today, 30 Billion parameter free local model is entirely comparable to a commercial one for code development. And this one is just plain dumb, harking back to 'spicy autocomplete'
"people use it as a substitute for actual experts, despite it not being an expert in anything and instead a mere token predictor"
The thing about 'mere token predictors' is that's exactly what expertise IN A NARROW KNOWLEDGE DOMAIN IS!!!
This is why inference engines are so good at coding, because ITS ALL NEXT TOKEN PREDICTOR...
...and let's not talk about #ZeroShot knowledge because that destroys the whole "stochastic parrot" narrative.👉 The thing about criticising #Ai is you have to put the effort in to stay current.
It is the fastest growing tech in history. If you have an anthropic test string in your bio, or you're still on the 'r' in strawberry page, you're advertising your intellectual incuriosity. In a field where last Tuesday is now ancient history, regurgitating old arguments where new ones pop up every week is a disservice to your cause.

We have been covering this since 2018. Back then we called it algorithmic discrimination.
The vocabulary changed. The question did not: who checks the system, and what happens to the people it gets wrong?

New York City paused generative AI for 2-K through 8th grade for one year.
The policy describes no AI literacy instruction for those same grades. The pause stops a practice; it does not teach anyone anything.
Will CS for All fill in the gap?

This is a very timely and thought-provoking insight by @tante on #GenAI adoption 👇🏻
Incidentally, as I relaunched my blog a few weeks back, a couple of folks asked me what my thoughts were RE: GenAI and whether I was going to use those automated services to (co-)write my blog posts.
My short answer: "Can’t slop, won’t slop – No LLMs involved, human powered"

AI BEYOND THE HYPE AND FEAR
This episode of The Rest Is Politics stood out.
Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart are not AI specialists, and that makes their perspective interesting. Despite the alarming title, this is no anti-AI rant: Rory in particular sees AI’s potential without downplaying the dangers. In a debate often reduced to hype versus rejection, that balance is refreshing.

The key AI question may not be whether the technology succeeds.
It may be who captures the value, who pays the cost, and who controls the infrastructure.
