While parents, schools, and lawmakers are still debating the impact of social media on children’s mental health, a new technology has taken the therapist’s seat: AI chatbots. 

In research that my colleagues and I published recently in JAMA Pediatrics, we found that the share of young people using AI chatbots for mental health advice rose from about 1 in 8 to about 1 in 5 in a single year — more than a 40% increase. That finding should end any illusion that this is a speculative problem. For millions of adolescents, AI is already part of the mental health landscape.

My PineNote blog posts were linked to from the main body of a discussion thread on Hacker News but due to the consistent and prolific AI scraping it's barely a blip on my traffic. Remember when humans used to hug sites to death? In the old days this would absolutely stick out.

The good news is a human emailed me and asked me for my experience one year in and that was nice (which is also how I found out about the HN post). I'll share my response below until I get around to fleshing out a blog post from it:

I should absolutely do a write-up a year in. I'll give you the highlights:

• I lost my original PineNote and after a few months of trying to get it back, I ended up getting a replacement, which should say something all in itself.
• I wish the device was a little bit smaller and lighter, but I have gotten used to it.
• I use it as a single function device at a time, mostly writing or reading, very occasional computing.
• However, I on a month-long trip and I only brought along my work laptop and the PineNote instead of bringing a personal laptop. I can do all the personal computing that I need on the PineNote and my phone. See my setup here: https://shom.dev/posts/20250406_a-pinenote-only-5-day-weekend/
• I wish Pine64 would update their images with the kernel optimization created by the community member hrdl, they do link to it from their official docs.
• There is also an interesting project called QuillOS, which provides a nice interface to the whole system, but it's not ready for primetime on PineNote.

“Thought it would be end of 2027, then early 2027,” he continued, “but agentic traffic growing so fast that bots have now passed human traffic online for the first time in the Internet’s history.”

"The rise is attributed to the continued proliferation of AI agents, largely autonomous programs that use tools that collaborate with high-level programs and data, with little human feedback.

Attaque crawlers IA en cours sur le serveur gayfr.online : 98% des challenges #Anubis sont rejetés (donc sont des bots), plus de 800 000 requêtes sur la semaine.

Du coup aucun impact sur les performances ni la disponibilité. Il reste juste un bot vietnamien malin qui passe sous les radars et interroge le service RSS avec plusieurs secondes ou minutes d'intervalle. Pas gênant mais je lui réglerai son compte.

I’ve added new metrics related to Anubis, which protects us against AI bots. So at the bottom, you’ll see the number of bots blocked on sight (red), the number of visits that need to verify the “I’m not a robot” page (orange), the percentage that succeed (meaning they aren’t bots, in yellow), and finally the number of accepted human visits (green).

What’s interesting is that the percentage of bots varies throughout the week but remains very high (between 65% and 96% depending on the time). That’s huge! They attack in swarms, just like a pain in the ass…

That justifies the efforts made to protect against them.

J'ai rajouté les nouveaux indicateurs relatifs à Anubis qui nous protège contre les bots IA. Ainsi à la fin vous verrez le nombre de bots bloqués à vue (rouge), le nombre de visites qui doivent valider la page "vous n'êtes pas un robot" (orange), le pourcentage qui réussissent (donc ne sont pas des bots, en jaune) et enfin le nombre de visites humaines acceptées (vert).

Ce qui est intéressant c'est que le % de bots varie dans la semaine mais reste très important (entre 65% et 96% selon les moments). C'est énorme ! Ils attaquent en escadrille, comme les emmerdes...

Ça justifie les efforts faits pour s'en protéger.

J'ai rajouté les nouveaux indicateurs relatifs à Anubis qui nous protège contre les bots IA. Ainsi à la fin vous verrez le nombre de bots bloqués à vue (rouge), le nombre de visites qui doivent valider la page "vous n'êtes pas un robot" (orange), le pourcentage qui réussissent (donc ne sont pas des bots, en jaune) et enfin le nombre de visites humaines acceptées (vert).

Ce qui est intéressant c'est que le % de bots varie dans la semaine mais reste très important (entre 65% et 96% selon les moments). C'est énorme ! Ils attaquent en escadrille, comme les emmerdes...

Ça justifie les efforts faits pour s'en protéger.

Sur la même semaine, 221 000 visites ont eu la page de vérification Anubis.

Sur celles-ci, seulement 4% ont passé la validation.

Sur la même semaine, 18 200 visites sont acceptées et identifiées comme humaines (ni robots ni fédération).

Ça fait quand même un paquets de bots et 96% (en moyenne sur les dernières 24 h) qui n’ont pas passé la validation. Sachant que ce chiffre varie chaque jour.

Quel gaspillage de ressources ! Quelle ampleur de tentative de vols de contenus ! Quelle empreinte environnementale ! C’est atterrant.
