When I saw just the text of the headline I was going to joke, "Made from cacao harvested from British glasshouses? In a limited edition of 15 bars, then?", but it turns out that's what they're referring to.

Today, ‘innovation’ has become synonymous with the rapid development of #AI, #precisionagriculture, bioengineering, and automation”.
The @ipesfood “Head in the Cloud” report examines how this shift is reshaping power in #agrifood systems & documents farmer-led and community-based innovations that are strengthening #soilhealth, conserving #agrobiodiversity, adapting crops to #climatechange, and building resilient local #agrifood systems🌱

M&E framework for sustainable PGRFA conservation in genebanks
"The conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) is essential for global food and nutrition security, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture. This study presents a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) framework applied across 20 countries in the Global South to assess the state of ex situ PGRFA conservation."

Are flower strips enough?
Strips of land planted with flowers between fields are much loved: they are beautiful and attract bees and butterflies. But is that enough for #Biodiversity? Researchers at our Uni say more diversity and collaboration across the landscape is needed: https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html?id=7916

Not sure whether anyone here is interested in genetic, and especially agricultural, biodiversity, but two huge names in the field are those of Erna Bennett and Otto Frankel. A new paper by Julia Nordblad examines their distinct contributions.

@echopapa @drupas took this pic of one of the #pulsesincrease beds today. Had sown D (French variety 'Marche des trois chenes'), but all ten seeds rotted away. Replaced it with a second row of variety F (Canario from Mexico) from my backup modules, though I will have to exclude that row from the experiment. The others are hanging in, but they haven't grown much in the last week or two...

Thank dawg for the folks outside of academia who are doing this work. Public universities and USDA absolutely should be doing more germplasm conservation, but in the case of USDA funding has been bad and in the case of public universities, they're more into conserving public subsidy of pro sports corporation employment training programs.
It is *crucial* to expand germplasm conservation in the face of climate emergency.

Via Bakers Relay, whose account Mastodon search is not allowing me to re-find in order to tag.
USDA has clonal germplasm repositories to save heritage varieties and wild relatives. They're grossly underfunded. Let your Congressperson and Senators know you'd like better funding for them.

"With 207 indigenous varieties and counting, it rains mangoes in Kannapuram. ... boasts a whopping 102 varieties among 382 trees, growing on a plot of just 300 square meters (3,230 square feet). On July 22, 2020—World Mango Day—the Kerala State Biodiversity Board declared Kuruvakkavu an Indigenous Mango Heritage Area. All this is thanks to the efforts of about 20 local families, led by 42-year-old police officer Shyju Machathi."
