It’s disingenuous of you to bring in a non-sequitur (Epstein affair) into this conversation.If the purpose of someone who, for whatever reason, decides to stand up an #instance on the #fedi is to make it a financially viable enterprise, then good luck to them because they are likely to fail. There is no #BusinessCase to support this.
It is my observation that most, if not all, instances are stood up from the perspective of idealism. The ideal that an internet #Agora can and should flourish in order to put #Grifting and #Toxic platforms out of business (along with all other Fedi ideals I commented on earlier). It is entirely #voluntary, i.e. not remunerated.
The fedi will live or die by the good nature of its hosts and supporters.
ERGO: #Donate what you can, when you can, to you host instance folks. The #InternetAgora depends on it. If you cannot afford it, support the #Fediverse and praise its lofty goals in your loudest voice.

Charging for access to the #Fedi would be like charging Athenians to enter the #Agora — absolute nonsense and anti-democratic imo.As an aside, when the #GenAISlopBubble collapse, there’s be heaps of cheap, quasi-free, storage and bandwith for the #fedi — I’ll bet on it.
