  2. New Article in Health Policy: »Experiences and social constructions of loneliness in later life: Collaborative focus group discussions in Germany«

    Graphical abstract of the article

While Aging in Place – the possibility to grow old in one’s own home – is a wide-spread ideal for many people, it comes with an increased risk of loneliness in later life. In a study spearheaded by my PhD student Andrea Kastl and co-authored together with Ulrike Fettke, we empirically explored the perspectives and practices of dealing with loneliness as voiced by older people who want to age in place. The study entitled “Experiences and social constructions of loneliness in later life: Collaborative focus group discussions in Germany” has now been published in the journal Health Policy. Our main conclusions based upon collaborative focus group discussions:

Assessing loneliness requires taking individual perspectives into account, as mere quantification of social contacts is insufficient for evaluation or intervention design. To help cope with loneliness, health professionals are an important social interface and can become a substitute for close relationships. This should be reflected in professional roles and in developing complementary technologies and policies.

The article is available open access over at Health Policy.

  5. Just wrote SMS, "Welcome to Geriatric Land" and proceeded from there to describe the task that needed to be carried out in prep for Tuesday's doctor's appointment. Didn't send them a sample photograph.

Beatifully sad, gets the tears and sadness flowing.

Which we rather need around here.

Little pesky English (?) to take the focus away from the tone of the singing and instruments.

    If not now then when?

  8. Phoned #AlzheimersWA - they're about real time support for carers (and those living with it I thnk).

Phoned #DementiaAustralia - they provide "info" and "trainings" for carers and professionals.

They both seem to be very well run, well staffed and, I guess, well funded.

I'm feeling very relieved finding this quality of support available.

After a hard day of #AgingInPlace aged care including too much back office Google-type technocrap, I'm settling down for a relaxing 1:12 hr:min of a dangerously deluded manipulative parent, career-minded offspring, mass violence, despair, betrayal & god knows what other delights, contained in a #TableTopShakespeare of #KingLear performed by #RobinArthur of #ForcedEntertainment with appearances by a stella cast of sauces bottles, bicycle shed lubricants & glass cylinder vases.

  12. Autonomy & Manipulation

This stuff is more complex than I'd thought.

I've bought a #RedPlate and now an #ElderlyRelative is not rejecting their meal, or rejecting it so much less that all of it gets eaten.

I'd like to hear from other carers and also parents on when you think manipulation is ok, when it fits with autonomy, when it doesn't, when it's not ok, and things like that.

This is ridiculous - over half the population will be unable to open these food containers. We need government regulation.

  16. 1/3

    #Australia
    Looking at #AustralianValues.

In the light of #AgedCare both commercialised and #AgingInPlace.

Claim is that some 50% of institutionalised aged care recipients don't get even one visitor a year.

It's been pointed out that many of these folk will have made choices that; A. had them lacking a support community, B. had them with no friends/family who they wanted to visit them, and/or, C. have no one wanting to visit them.

Their choices form part of Australia's values.

  18. Been thinking about the benefits to a community, a nation, and individuals, in having to some large degree, folk with #Dementia being cared for by family and/or friends being #AmateurCarers.

Some similar benefits might also come with #AgingInPlace. And be largely lost with #CommercialisedAgeCare.

(To be clear, I'm not advocating that this care be imposed on family and/or friends.)

#ElderlyRelative's #TileApp reports her credit card is astray in a restaurant some distance from home.

Helpers keep getting timed out on website as they try to get a stop put on the credit card.

Two key takeaways for me: an aging in place strategy needs to keep people in view as they age, not hide them away, and we need dependable transit service to help people stay connected to the community. #housing #transit #aginginplace
