En scrollant les réseaux sociaux, vous êtes peut-être déjà tombés sur des images générées par IA (enfants, animaux mignons ou en difficultés et d’autres types de représentations). On pourrait penser que les internautes sont déjà vigilants face à ce type de faux contenus, mais ce n’est clairement pas le cas. On peut ainsi lire des milliers de commentaires d’utilisateurs (souvent des personnes âgées) qui tombent dans le panneau, si bien que ces fakes représentent une menace grandissante.
De faux sauvetages d’animaux
Le rapport “Spot the Scam: Unmasking Fake Animal Rescues”, réalisé par un réseau de 29 organisations de protection des animaux s’est ainsi penché sur le sujet. Cité par nos confrères du site London Economic, Alan Knight, président d’International Animal Rescue, commente ainsi :
La présentation de faux sauvetages est une manière particulièrement ignoble et écœurante d’exploiter et de maltraiter les animaux pour de l’argent – et encore plus parce qu’elle joue sur la compassion et la gentillesse des gens. un public involontaire désireux de voir des animaux souffrant sauvés du mal.
Il demande donc aux plateformes de mieux réguler et modérer ces contenus qui renvoient parfois vers des pages de dons pour escroquer leurs cibles. Les chiffres cités par ce rapport publié en ce mois d’octobre sont d’ailleurs assez spectaculaires.
Les analystes ont ainsi repéré 1022 liens montrant de faux contenus de sauvetage d’animaux en six semaines sur Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok et X. Dans 21 % des cas, ces acteurs malveillants renvoyaient les internautes vers des demandes de dons souvent sur PayPal. De même et dans 22 % des cas, ces contenus étaient directement suggérés par les algorithmes de ces services.
Au final, ces associations légitimes craignent que ces faux contenus ne viennent perturber leurs activités de sauvetages d’animaux et que le grand public perde totalement confiance.
Les catastrophes exploitées par les cybercriminels
Malheureusement, ces escrocs ne limitent pas leurs activités à ces thématiques. Pour ne citer qu’un seul exemple, des médias américains ont récemment repéré que l’ouragan Hélène qui a fait des centaines de morts dans le sud-est des États-Unis est déjà exploité en vue de soutirer de l’argent aux internautes désireux d’aider.
On l’aura compris, ces arnaques risquent de se multiplier et il convient de redoubler de vigilance face à ce fléau. On peut aussi espérer que les réseaux sociaux vont améliorer leur modération de ces contenus produits par IA et mieux protéger leurs utilisateurs.
