“whether watching John Doe drive to work justifies the massive computational overhead.“

To me you need a good reason to learn to code something. The good reason in HS should be to explore another area of learning (ie. A two for one). So my thought is either NetLogo or Julia with Agents.jl and learn something about science in the process. Ecology, physics/dynamics, forest fires, whatever. There are so many ways #agentbasedmodels can give that two for one.

  3. Happy to join Mathematical Biosciences as an editorial board member. From what I hear I am not the only person in my group joining at this time but I am hoping to bring my expertise in #AgentBasedModels and #EvolutionaryGameTheory to model #CancerEvolution and #TreatmentResistance in the context of #Ecology

  4. I would say Agent Based Modeling is pretty much my favorite kind of model. It really gets into the heart of thinking about the process that is going on. I have this dream to found a nonprofit specifically aimed at tackling complex social issues with insight from ABMs. The question is just how to get funding to do it and a critical mass of participants to work on it. #agentbasedmodels

  5. #Introduction for a new instance 👋

I'm a PhD student in Urban and Regional #Planning at the University of #Hawaii

Studying regional revitalization in #Japan, #Korea, and elsewhere in East and Southeast #Asia

I'm a big #JuliaLang fan interested in its applications for social science. I also create #AgentBasedModels

Catch me supporting #LAFC and watching #soccer

  6. New article & plug for an exciting journal: I just published a #replication of an important agent-based model, defending it against recent criticism and showing that "Groups of diverse problem-solvers outperform groups of highest-ability problem-solvers - most of the time": dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7484

This is published in ReScience C, a platinum OA journal for replications of computational research ... a great initiative!

Another interesting way into this kind of thing is #agentbasedmodels you could get Uri Wilenskis book and start playing with NetLogo

  8. This textbook on #agentbasedmodels for use in Archeology looks extremely interesting. santafeinstitute.github.io/ABM thanks to @cdwren and colleagues for making this available to the world. #ABM

  9. I had a long Convo with my wife this morning about a #biology process she's studying. Inevitably the conversation began to tilt towards agent/rule based descriptions of the process (like "what makes these cells stop migrating"). We have tried to get funding for building #agentbasedmodels of bone healing but the funding agencies mostly aren't interested. Agencies don't "get it" they act as though they think model building is pointless, they want to fund experiments.

  10. #introduction when the database crashed I lost some followers, but because I hadn't backed up my account yet, I am not sure who they all are. As an extended introduction I'll tag some common topics I like to discuss, maybe people will see those.

  11. So excited to see the active #PhysiCell community!

This #preprint #mathbio stems from our 2021 workshop and hacakthon. Inês Gonçalves, David Hormuth II, Sandhya Prabhakaran, and Caleb M. Phillips They made an extension for calibrating and optimizing #AgentBasedModels written with PhysiCell.

    Way to go!!! @biorxivpreprint

  12. #introduction
Hi all, for those who don't know me. I am an ecologist working on response of biodiversity to global change, mostly in managed systems (forests, farmland, cities) where trees are found. I use modelling tools, particularly #AgentBasedModels. Very keen to redefine "habitat" to make it more functional, and to put #conservation in the interdisciplinary context it requires.

  13. I've now pivoted from timescales of millions of years, to days/weeks. I'm interested in how sexual conflict in insects changes (or doesn't) when population densities are very low. In particular, can insects' capacity for #parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction) help them survive population bottlenecks?

I hope to address this topic with experiments and #AgentBasedModels / #IndividualBasedModels. I'm also interested in using #MachineLearning to make the #simulation process more efficient.

  14. #introduction 👋

I am a junior research group leader for #ecoevo #modelling at the University of Hohenheim in Germany.

We study all kinds of #EcologicalNetworks. We want to know how such networks are structured, how they maintain their balance and how they respond to #globalchange. We approach these questions from a theoretical point of view, using computer simulations and mathematics.
