It has taken me 7 months, but I finally finished reading SIMONE WEIL: A LIFE by Simone Pétrement (1973, transl. 1976).

    Even though I alraady knew the tragic ending of Weil's too-brief life...

    ...still, I feel very much like I just witnessed the death of a dear friend, admired mentor, and prophet who accurately described what we're living in now.

    Rest in peace and grace, Simone Weil. You were magic, and still are.

  16. Having chosen sanctity as a defense against excoriation as a toddler, certain aspects of my character, like insufferability, got exasperated

    But there are definite pluses

    My general attitude toward anyone is #agape and I screw it up all the time, but always training back toward the agape

    But there's something else that while I watch the revenge club I feel so grateful is generally not within me I can brood and be bitter but I don't seek revenge

    I couldn't be very agape if I did

    And I have a couple different ways of looking at it but it's one of the ways that I actually have a rather wry and dry sense of salvation

    But also my own little proof of God

    When someone is treating me poorly, in the first place I know that they can do it again so I know who to avoid but then in the second place if that is their character then one of the things that I feel absolutely is the trust that their poor choices or nasty choices inevitably, in the long run reap the worlwind

    As I like to throw out when it's an especially delicious crab rave or something horrible happens to someone notoriously bad, that when God says 'vengeance is mine' a better translation is 'chill, hold my beer'

    You want to talk about a smugstorm...

  24. I sometimes get excited about silly things.

    I recently started using the caddy webserver in place of nginx because I wanted to try using SRV records to point my reverse proxy at a pool of API servers using different ports. SRV records include port information, so they're handy for that purpose. The OSS version of nginx doesn't support using SRV records in this way.

    http://agape.money {
        handle_path /api* {
            reverse_proxy {
                dynamic srv _api._tcp.dev.agape.money
            }
        }

        handle {
            reverse_proxy web-service.agape.svc.cluster.local:3000
        }
    }

    The API servers are running on ports 8081 and 8082 under the _api._tcp name. The more general catchall is pointing at a dynamic record managed by an internal Kubernetes cluster pointing at a service in the agape namespace.

  30. The strength of the common good can be traced through the Greek forms of #love.

    #Eros is appetitive and possessive—the selfish engine of market exchange, always hungry to consume more.

    #Philia runs deeper: once the bond of civic friendship, the solidarity that held republican citizens together in the shared polis, in koinonia.

    #Agape goes further still: self-giving, gratuitous, oriented to the good itself.

    Où l’ombre et la clarté s’entrelacent sans fin,
    Tu fus bras secourable et tu fus main de fer,
    Tu portas nos vertus comme nos lendemains.

    On t’accuse, et c’est juste : croisades, inquisition,
    Les abus, les silences, les complicités noires ;
    Mais qu’on regarde aussi ton autre mission,
    Soigner, instruire, sauver, transmettre et faire mémoire.

    Dans tes pierres encore résonnent les prières,
    Dans tes chants s’élève l’espérance obstinée ;
    Et malgré la poussière et les fautes amères,
    C’est ton souffle qui tient la lampe allumée.

    Si l’on nie ta laideur, on trahit la vérité ;
    Mais si l’on nie ta grâce, on renie l’humanité.

    PS pour ma sœur qui s’interroge beaucoup 😉 : voici le miens de texte. Nous en avions parlé un soir avec Ludovic à la paroisse. Nous avions le désir de parler de la même chose.
