  2. Part II - In 1934, Nassy decided to study painting. He was admitted to an academy of fine arts in Brussels. In 1939, he married a Belgian + began earning a living as a portrait #artist. The Germans occupied Belgium in May 1940, but Nassy + his wife did not leave. After the USA entered the war, Nassy was arrested as an enemy national in German-occupied Belgium. He spent the rest of the war in an #internmentcamp in Germany

  3. Part I - #JosefNassy was an Afro-Jewish #artist + #Holocausttsurvivor born in 1904 in Surinam. His father was of Jewish descent + his mother Surinamese, of African descent. In 1928 Nassy received work in Europe for Warner Brothers but had to prove he was a US citizen. He pretended to be born in San Francisco prior to the 1899 earthquake, when records had been destroyed, + the ruse worked.
