  1. @Nonilex Full disclosure: Just today I helped my 26 yo son sign up for an ACA plan that has a $10,600 deductible.

I told him this is just so he’s covered in the event he has an accident or illness that puts him in the hospital for a long time.

Otherwise, he’s on his own. (Of course, we’ll help if we can.)

  2. @Nonilex …because we know that everyone just has $31k lying around just in case they need it, right? Check between the sofa cushions again, kids!

  3. The #Trump admin’s proposed new rules for #Obamacare plans next year would shift more #healthcare costs to Americans, with much higher deductibles leading to higher #medical bills.

Under the proposal, people who rely on the #AffordableCareAct for their #HealthInsurance coverage could choose plans with misleading lower monthly premiums that would leave them exposed to medical expenses totaling thousands of dollars more than #ACA plans do now before their #insurance would kick in.

  4. Consumers can continue to enroll in plans through Thurs, for coverage that becomes effective on Feb 1. After that, in the absence of any congressional action, the annual open enrollment period will be over for people signing up through the federal marketplace, & most people may have to wait until next year to enroll.

  5. The expiration of the extra #subsidies has DOUBLED the amount people will have to pay for #insurance, on average. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the result will result in 2 million more Americans becoming uninsured this year. But other analysts have estimated larger losses of coverage.

  6. Numbers published by the #FederalGovernment on Monday indicated that 22.8M Americans had enrolled in #ACA plans starting Jan 1, down from 24.2M enrolled by mid-Jan last year.

A bipartisan group of senators has been meeting to discuss a compromise plan, which would extend some funding to consumers with more limitations. But the details of that plan have not been finalized, & its prospects for passage remain unclear.

  7. Attys for the #state argued that #abortion can’t violate the #Wyoming #constitution because it is not #healthcare. [um, tell that to the mothers who may die because of high risk pregnancies. #AbortionIsHealthcare]

Voters approved the constitutional amendment in 2012 in response to the federal #AffordableCareAct. The justices recognized that the amendment wasn’t written to apply to abortion but said it’s not their job to “add words” to the state constitution. [I love reasonable people.]

  9. Drs Makary & Bhattacharya are also expected to make announcements about #healthcare that #transgender young people receive.

The pivot to the topic of transgender minors comes one day after #Republicans in the #House of Representatives passed a package of #health care bills that do not extend subsidies for people who buy #HealthInsurance in #AffordableCareAct plans.

  10. Rep. Sarah McBride Condemns Republicans’ Upcoming Anti-Trans Votes

One bill proposes a national felony ban on trans youth health care, another aims to bar Medicaid from covering care.

  11. The stunning move comes after #House #Republican leaders pushed ahead with a #healthcare bill that does not address the soaring monthly #premiums that millions of people will soon endure as the tax credits for those who buy #insurance through the #AffordableCareAct expire at year’s end.

#Democrats led by Minority Leader #HakeemJeffries of New York needed 218 signatures to force a floor vote on their bill, which would extend the subsides for 3 years.

  12. Most #Republicans are vehemently opposed to the #AffordableCareAct, which was implemented in 2014 during the #Obama admin, but they have been unable to coalesce around a plan to replace it. A small group of Republicans from swing districts, alarmed about the political consequences of allowing the subsidies to expire, had been urging Johnson to allow a vote on allowing them to continue, at least temporarily.

After a closed-door morning meeting with Republicans, Johnson ruled out such a vote.

  13. Instead, the #House is set on Wednesday to consider a narrow #GOP #health care plan that would allow #AffordableCareAct subsidies beefed up during the pandemic to expire & make several small changes aimed at bringing down costs over the long term.

The speaker’s decision came after a day of waffling that reflected the deep disarray in GOP ranks over how to address rising #healthcare costs, an issue that #Democrats have promised to make a centerpiece of their midterm election campaigns.

  14. Though #MikeJohnson had signaled openness to allowing debate on the proposal, he ultimately rejected a bid to do so by politically vulnerable #Republicans who had hoped for a vote that would, at the very least, allow them to show voters they had tried to avoid rising premiums.

  15. Speaker #MikeJohnson on Tuesday shut the door on a vote to extend #AffordableCareAct subsidies that are set to expire at the end of the year, bucking moderates in his party who had urged action to prevent millions of Americans from facing higher #health care costs starting Jan 1.

  16. This will only become more pronounced now. If you have money, you may get the treatment you need.

If you don't have money, you're out of luck.

And, of course, when over half of white Christians who proudly profess to be pro-life have voted for Trump three times, this all comes to us courtesy of pro-life Christian voters.

  17. This will affect all of us, not just the poorest among us, those covered by ACA. It will have knock-on effects across the healthcare sector as many people opt out of coverage altogether.

Whether you get medical treatment already depends in the US — as opposed to all other developed nations — on how much money you have.

  18. As Eric Berger reports, now that Republicans have decided to kill healthcare coverage for the least affluent among us, the average amount Americans enrolled in ACA can expect to pay annually for premiums is estimated to rise from $888 this year to $1,904 in 2026.

This will affect all of us, not just the poorest among us, those covered by ACA.
