2 Years ago today I was in his same situation, and ended up on the streets with my cat in the dead of Winter. That experience still haunts me greatly, my heart pounds just recalling all I went through. Tox doesnt deserve this. @News Sure, downloading your mastodon archive is one way to get all of the pictures you uploaded, but it doesn’t show the posts themselves.

But on Aethy, I discovered there’s another way that does! And it’s much faster than waiting for your archive to be ready. Just click your user icon. Choose” Show Replies” to include all of your conversations. And then just scroll… ALL THE WAY DOWN until see your very first post. I just hold the END key on my keyboard until the scrolling stops. Then go to File > Save (or press CTRL+S) Choose “Web Page, complete (.html)” And this will save a single HTML file and a folder containing every picture you posted inside it.

Opening the HTML in a browser will look messy at first, but all of your posts are in there. To make it look right, just modify the HTML to use the “common-828f2b22.chunk.css” file. Then it will look perfect when you open it.

This only seems to work on Aethy. Other mastodon instances un-load images as soon as they scroll off screen, making it hard to save them.

fandom-wise, I'm most actively into Narnia (some kind of frankencanon of the movies and the books) and the Queen's Thief series right now, but I'm liable to get obsessed with something new and different at any moment. more than a third of all the fic I've ever posted is for MDZS (mainly Xiyao), and the next-most-represented fandom in my works is Saint Seiya.

ships-wise, I can be talked into almost anything, but, as a start: Edmund/Susan is my Narnia OTP; in Queen's Thief I write Gen/Irene but I like Gen/Helen too and really I just like playing around with Gen as a character. (I like other characters from QT too, especially Sophos, but Gen is the one I've been gleefully tormenting in my mind every night before bed this month, lol.) as far as big fandoms go, I grew up on Wincest and I read plenty of Stucky and Kylux.

despite all my current active fandoms being fantasy series, I actually think of myself as a scifi fan first; I grew up on Star Trek, Stargate, and Star Wars, I think Babylon 5 is the best TV show ever made, and the canon that's had the most profound and lasting influence on me as a writer is the original Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVA 🌌 I'm very fond of historical fiction too, especially war fiction and 1910s-1940s boarding school stories.

other interests/hobbies/other topics I'm likely to post about include: day-to-day life stuff like cooking and budgeting; pro wrestling and sports (baseball, cricket, hockey); some combination of eclectic religion, lay philosophy, meditation, and parts work; old-school and/or painfully nerdy tech stuff (Linux etc.); math and computer science; knitting and (hand)sewing. I speak some Finnish but I'm not fluent, more like A2/B1 depending on the situation.

Heyo! I'm yet another user finding someplace to roost after #Aethy announced its shutdown.

I'm just some guy. A little queer creature, if you will. I prefer he/him or e/em pronouns, generally, but I won't get mad if you use something else. I'm not very picky. Just kinda chose a couple sets for convenience.

I've been obsessed with cats my entire life, and it shows no sign of stopping. I will find a way to involve cats in everything I do, even things that should not involve them. If a fanfic has more than 10k words, there's probably a cat somewhere. Most of my original characters are cats or are affiliated with them in some way. I have multiple fictional cat species that I like to play with.

The cats. They are everywhere.

How to Archive Your Text Posts on Aethy

Setup

1. On firefox, download this extensionhttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/re-pagination-webext-fork/
2. (Optional) download the hide images extension to make the following steps easier and faster to load https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/image-hide
3. Change your preferences (The gears to the left of your icon) and in the"Posts" tab, uncheck collapsed posts and set Content Visibility to visible (you can change it back after the archiving)

Loading

1. Navigate to your hide boosts page https://aethy.com/@YOURNAME/hide_boosts4a. (Optional) Turn on The Hide Images extension on this page to make the future loading faster (The images will still be downloaded)
2. Right click on the "Hide Boosts" tab and go to the re-pagination menu item, and click "Load All"
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page or press the "End" key to activate the infinite scroll feature. (If you see a purple loading bar in the top left repeatedly filling, you've done it right)
4. Get a snack, walk away, wait for it to do its thing (You're allowed to switch tabs and it will load in the background) Sometimes you may have to press the end key again for it to continue loading, but just keep an eye out for your first post or oldest post you want to save

Saving

1. Once you've reached the beginning of your blog, right click somewhere on the page and select "Save Page As" and look for a place to save it onto your computer
2. Once it has downloaded, open the htm file in firefox. 9a. It's gonna look janky as hell right now, especially if you've had emojis in your username, it'll be between every post. To get rid of the excess images if you'd like, enter the files folder of the htm page (it will be in the same location as where you saved the htm file, just have all the media in its own folder with the same name)9b. You can safely delete all sfg files, duplicates or any other superfluous content you already have from the basic archive
3. Turn on "Reader View" either by clicking the icon in the url bar or pressing F9
4. CTRL + A and Ctrl + V (Select All and Paste) into a text editor of your choice (Drive, Obsidian, Notepad)

Voila, you have just archived all your text posts.

Additional Notes

• Why do this when you have the inhouse mastodon archive? If you take a look at the archive, they are json files and they fucking SUCK to try to navigate to look at all your posts in an easy format. And in the situation of bookmarks, they straight up only link to the posts, what good is that?
• This process will include Followers Only and Unlisted Posts but not replies from what I can tell. However, you can do this on anybody's page you have access to, on aethy or off.
• This guide is also meant to be performed from the aethy site itself. You should also be able to do this on pages via cubhub.social for any other page it federates with, once aethy is gone
• For reference of time this takes, I had 12,000 posts and used the hide images addon before starting the process. In the time it took to go to the bathroom and come back it had finished. All images were still downloaded into the files folder.

Final Thoughts

Fandom history is so important. With the state of crushing culture pushing us to further and darker corners away from each other, lost media is a heart breaking side effect of fractured communities. If you love someones posts, save them! You never know if one day it'll simply be gone. If you like looking back at your old time capsules, backup your activities! By keeping the memories of our resistance alive, we can keep going on.
