  3. Today's poem:

    Zeus
    - by Aeschylus

    O Zeus, who e'er Thou be,
    If that name please thee well,
    By that I call on Thee;
    For weighing all things else I fail to tell
    Of any name but Zeus;
    If once for all I seek
    Of all my haunting, troubled thoughts a truce,
    That name I still must speak.

    Sure, we know the basics of the story, but the reading reveals far more about the nature of power and the principles of loyalty , the methods of governance and the providence of resistance.

    Strangely still too relevant a classic drama of one who stands alone against politics based in fear, who gives mankind nothing less than culture and the concepts of self-will and hope.

    "The Aithiopian land, where seven-channelled Neilos (the Nile) rolles its refreshing tide, fed by abundant, wind-born rain, and therein the fire-eyed sun [#Helios] beaming forth upon the earth, melts the snow amid the rocks."

  10. Has anyone seen Na Peirsigh in the Abbey? I always like seeing productions of ancient Greek plays, although they can often go horribly wrong (usually by trying to make them relevant to contemporary concerns in a heavy-handed manner). As the official oldest surviving play in the world I think I have to see this, plus it provides an opportunity to see whether I have made any actual progress with my Irish.
