In his paper, @johnquiggin proposes a carve up of the NEM based on the following principles:
“Markets are used where they add value, regulation is tightened where monopoly persists, and public ownership is deployed selectively where it lowers costs, improves accountability, and reduces systemic risk.”
It is a well argued position and given current emphasis on the on-going electrification required for climate actions, it make perfect sense. A long read (as papers generally are) but written in a way to be accessible to the public and form the basis for a rigourous public discourse. One which must be had if we are to relieve the cost of living and meet our 2050 targets.
I commend this paper to you all.

Another article mentioning synchronous condensers for #electrical grids, to provide 'inertia' and help system reliability when other systems suddenly come up, or suddenly drop out.
I can see that spinning a large lump of metal provides a source of physical angular momentum, and that tapping that angular momentum can turn it into nicely narrowband sinusoidal voltages on a powerline - at least in the immediate/short term
How/why can't grid scale batteries and inverters do the same thing?
If we can switch large enough power sources in and out fast enough then surely we can produce or force any waveform.
Do existing large battery installations not do this thing? Or not do it well? Or not do it cheaply? Or not fast-enough?

AEMO says 10 yrs to run Australia’s grid on 100% renewables. Try 5. Rooftop solar already dominates days—grid-forming batteries & VPPs will scale faster than anyone expects to cover night load. Mild days at 100% before 2030? Locked in. The grid’s flipping. ⚡☀️🔋 #AEMO #EnergyTransition #BESS #LFP

First up: Not saying that this contributed to the widespread electricity outage in Spain and Portugal.
And I know that AEMO will be watching the post event reviews very carefully.
But it was identified in the 2020 Renewable Integration Study that there was the possibility of mass disconnection of low voltage distributed (ie rooftop) solar in response to a low voltage event. And that was of particular concern in South Australia and West Australia.
And as a result since 2020 it is a requirement in South Australia (at least, haven't looked to see how widespread) that inverters be able to pass a short duration undervoltage test.

(I've heard that AEMO are aiming to have the capability of achieving dispatch of 100% renewable electricity by this year. The current peak renewable dispatch of ~70% in 2024 had availability of renewables equivalent to more than 100% of demand, but AEMO couldn't bring it onto the NEM at that time)

No matter what happens in the next QLD election, the ≈900MW MacIntyre wind farm is starting to send power to the grid.

Looks like the generators are taking the piss again today, unnecessarily pushing up power prices to serve their profits.

The Guardian article, a must read, talks about the ‘political debate’ around the LNP nuclear power generation policy. That’s all it is, political fisty-cuffs because there is no ‘debate’ to be had. Nuclear power generation was shut out of the Australian energy landscape a long time ago, and nothing has changed to review that decision. LNP nuclear policy is a non-starter, a ghost without skin, a diversion, a misdirection, a complete and utter fantasy made up by idiots vying for space in the media and the brain-dead. Pffff… #lnp #nuclear_power_generation ##auspol #AEMO

The Australian Energy Regulator and the Australian Energy Market Commission need to get their shit together.
“Queensland’s Ergon and Energex already have 850 megawatts of controlled demand in both hot water and air-conditioning systems.
“The state has a huge head start on the demand flexibility needed to optimise variable renewable energy generation and consumption, yet #EnergyQueensland has recently implemented rooftop solar cutoffs for systems over 10kVA meaning they can switch off these systems when requested by the Australian Energy Market Operator (#AEMO).”

Moving rapidly to wind and #solar [generated] power is the key to helping drive down soaring power prices in the long term, #AEMO chief executive Damien Westerman told Nine Newspapers.
Moving away from international [priced] #coal and #MethaneGas supplies will help protect Australians from future price shocks. #noNewGas
