Recharged my gravid Aedes traps (GATs) with water that was infested with mosquitoes. This will likely increase their catch rate substantially because mosquitoes love to lay eggs in water that already has mosquitoes. But don't worry, I plopped in a bit of a Mosquito Dunk into each one so nothing will be maturing to adulthood. PLUS these traps are designed with screening on the top part, so even if adults emerged they couldn't get out. They are made by Biogents (Regensburg, Germany). #mosquitos #aedes #biogents

Wij Weigeren de Huurverhoging, Bond Precaire Woonvormen, Woonprotest Utrecht, Woonopstand (bron)
De maat is vol. Op 1 juli komt er een nieuwe huurexplosie en worden huurders wederom opgezadeld met stijgende woonlasten. De tweejarige huurbevriezing voor sociale huur in de corporatiesector is definitief van tafel geveegd. Minister Mona Keijzer greep de val van het kabinet-Schoof direct aan om het halfbakken wetsvoorstel, dat veel groepen huurders al uitsloot, terug te trekken. De rekening? Die wordt opnieuw bij ons, de huurders, neergelegd.
Wij zeggen: Genoeg is genoeg. Wij eisen huurverlaging!
De woningcorporaties, verenigd in hun lobbyclub Aedes, hebben actief gelobbyd vóór de huurverhoging. De huren rijzen al jaren de pan uit, waardoor veel huurders financieel klem zitten. Grootschalige investeringen vanuit de overheid in brede volkshuisvesting en verduurzaming blijven uit. De overheid laat huurders al jaren letterlijk in de kou zitten. De wooncrisis komt niet uit de lucht vallen. Het recht op wonen wordt al tientallen jaren systematisch afgebroken.
Aedes kiest duidelijk voor hogere huren, niet voor mensen. Aedes strijdt structureel tégen maatregelen die huurders moeten helpen, zoals huurbevriezing of verlaging. Terwijl kopers jaarlijks € 11 miljard ontvangen via de hypotheekrenteaftrek, worden sociale huurders ondertussen extra belast via de vennootschapbelasting. Hiermee worden de rijken bevoordeeld ten koste van de armen.
Het is tijd dat wij zelf opstaan. Voor ons recht op waardig wonen. Voor lagere huren. Voor een eerlijke toekomst.
Op 27 juni om 13:00 verzamelen wij ons bij het kantoor van Aedes in Den Haag op Anna van Buerenplein 42 (vlak naast Den Haag Centraal). Wij komen met onze eisen én met een zwartboek: met verhalen van huurders over de impact van torenhoge huren. Wij leggen ons niet neer bij hun beleid van afbraak. Wij eisen:

Woonzekerheid voor iedereen
Zeggenschap voor huurders
Structurele investeringen in echte volkshuisvesting
Stop met het intimideren van huurders die hun huurverhoging weigeren

Rechtbank Den Haag, woensdag 4 juni om 11:00 CEST
Op woensdag 4 juni stapt Aedes, de vereniging van 230 woningcorporaties, naar de rechter om te eisen dat de aangekondigde huurbevriezing wordt teruggedraaid. Aedes stelt dat door de aangekondigde huurbevriezing nieuwbouw, renovatie en verduurzaming zal stilvallen. De realiteit is echter dat de huren al jaren worden verhoogd met recordpercentages, terwijl de nieuwbouw van sociale huurwoningen achterblijft en huurders tientallen jaren blijven zitten in schimmelwoningen. Overheidsinvesteringen in volkshuisvesting blijven uit en het geld voor het oplossen van de wooncrisis wordt eenzijdig bij huurders vandaan getrokken. Tijd om in actie te komen!
Terwijl de vermogens van veel corporaties groot zijn, worden talrijke sociale huurwoningen gesloopt, verkocht en geliberaliseerd. Met als resultaat dat huren onbetaalbaar geworden, wachtlijsten groeien en steeds grotere groepen huurders niet meer rond kunnen komen na het betalen van de huur. De politiek en Aedes spelen zo huurders en woningzoekenden tegen elkaar uit.
Op 10 mei gingen we de straat op voor lagere huren en nu is het weer tijd om te laten zien waar we voor staan. We strijden al jaren voor lagere huren en woonzekerheid voor iedereen, zie onder andere onze 19 argumenten voor lagere huren. Tegen populistisch wanbeleid waarbij mensen die het water aan de lippen staat een worst wordt voorgehouden. Wat wij willen is consistent beleid dat breed toegankelijke volkshuisvesting oplevert voor iedereen. Dat betekent onder andere dat wonen uit de markt moet worden gehaald en een basisvoorziening moet worden. Uitgaven voor woningbouw en verduurzaming moeten niet enkel verhaald worden op zittende huurders. Wij eisen lagere huren!

I purchased two Skeet-O-Traps (Dalen Products, Nashville, TN) to see whether they can successfully attract pregnant mosquitoes. You fill the container with water and some old leaves and grass, place the floating piece inside, then situate next to foliage. The insert has screening that is supposed to prevent the larger larvae (and pupae) from being able to escape (i.e., no need for pesticide or Mosquito Dunk). I'm sure the mosquitoes will oviposit into them but I'm concerned that the screen won't work. Stay tuned. #mosquitoes #aedes

I inspected all the containers that accumulated water during last week's steady rain. Every single one had a thriving population of mosquito larvae. Een gemiddeld grote gemeente wordt gevraagd vier mensen uit de asielopvang te halen, zodat er plek vrijkomt voor asielzoekers uit het aanmeldcentrum in #TerApel. If you need to know what mosquito larvae look like, here you go. These are probably Asian tiger mosquitoes. The different sizes are because they go through four larval instars as they age, followed by a pupal stage that doesn't feed. The youngest instar is barely visible even when you zoom the video. Some species take less than a week to mature into an adult, which is why you should dump containers of stagnant water every several days. #mosquitoes #larvae #diptera #insects #aedes

I checked the sticky card in one of my autocidal gravid ovitraps yesterday and found six Asian tiger mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus). Six is admittedly a small number but one can tally their current and future broods, too, so perhaps as many as 1800 fewer mosquitoes. I have five of these devices in my yard. #mosquitoes #insects #aedes #entomology

Am curious whether Aedes albopictus (1) requires contact with water before depositing eggs on the side of a container, (2) how far above the waterline it typically oviposits, (3) whether it prefers to oviposit onto certain substrates. I can't seem to find any articles on these topics. #mosquitoes #aedes #oviposition #biology #entomology

AHA! Found the #Aedes #mosquitos... they somehow are small enough to wriggle through hydroton in my #hydroponics bins. Floating BT has been added to every bin now, and the worst offenders dumped and refilled (nothing like opening the lid and having a dozen mosquitos happy to see your legs!) :-(
