Does anyone have a favored method for making buttonholes on quilted fabric? I thought “oh that’s a problem for future Sarah to figure out” when I started sewing this but somehow future-Sarah’s problem has turned into present-Sarah’s problem and it’s deeply annoying when the timeline catches up to me like this.

CW: PeerTube admin nonsense. (LONG)
Let me run through my thinking process and someone else tell me where I've gone wrong...
I have a small instance with limited storage, but I can always raise it if needed and funds are available.
Because of the small storage, I want it's cost to equal its value, so I insist that the content of the videos be intentional. No random videos of weddings or concerts. Nothing you'd find on a lost SD card.
To let people know about this, I created an announcement page that explains what my instance is looking for, how much memory they will be given, and an approximation of how many videos you can make with the storage allotment. There is a link to this page in a bright blue box at the top of every page on the instance. You can't miss it.
At the bottom of this page I write "If you request an account but do not say the type of content you intend to make, you will be rejected immediately."
The result is that I mostly get people requesting accounts that missed the link somehow, or they read it, say the type of content they want to make, and it's just random shit. The one thing I said that I didn't want on the instance.
Then I see big Instances that have storage shooting out of their asses offering "Unlimited" storage (which the instance owners know is a gimmick. Most accounts will probably never go over 10 gigs.) which, when compared to my limited storage, feels safer to the creator. So video creators lean towards the larger instances.
So the question is, how do I get video creators with intention to use my instance rather then one of the giant instances?
The only thing that I can offer is that it's managed hosting, which means likely shorter down times, and a moderator that's always looking out for them. Two things I doubt anyone cares about.
What would YOU do in my situation? (and no, raising the storage to be as much as the bigger instances isn't an option.)

#Edinburgh #Biketooter #EdinburghBike #EdinburghCycling #AdviceWanted
Edinburgh friends, I'm thinking of buying a bike for the first time in quite a few years (early 50s guy here!). I'm probably looking for a hybrid for city and non-MTB use.
My question is: what friendly bike shops in the city would you recommend? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money on a new bike, but have no recent experience in any of this!
Thanks in advance!

Tech question. The small charity I support has a scan snap Fujitsu scanner S1300. Support for this machine is discontinued. I have found and downloaded a driver but I can’t get ScanManager to work. Is there a good generic/open source solution? My Pc is on #Windows10

actually #duckduckfedi/#askfedi: are there any good editors/IDEs that aren't like really AI focused?
(I have a feeling someone's going to say something like neovim: I'm talking about... "GUI" editors I guess? stuff like VSCode.
VSCodium seems intriguing but afaik it doesn't support the extension marketplace??? so I'm not sure about it.
or for that matter, can you just easily disable all the AI stuff in Zed??? because I wouldn't mind trying it if so... but the marketing is so AI focused so I'm skeptical)

typically, I am out of my depth on my next knitting project:
https://www.garnstudio.com/pattern.php?id=5522&cid=17 is the pattern i would like to make - I would also accept being directed to something similar (kind of a shrug with armholes type thing) that will also use my 250 g (530 yds) of bulky yarn.
I am not sure how to read this pattern. I also don't have double pointed needles, and would like to hop straight into circular.
any tips for what they mean by "the pattern"? tips for the armholes?
"K 2 sts in every st" - is that knit 1 front and knit one back, or sorta knit 2 front? or something else?
hi! I am having a great time. this next yarn is so soft, this will be fun.

Wondering if anyone can recommend a (free) way to follow Instagram feeds in an RSS reader? I searched online for a way to convert an Instagram user's feed to an RSS feed but it appears it's “complicated”…
I self-host #FreshRSS and would like to be able to follow some music-related Instagram feeds which post about local gigs etc. I ditched my Instagram account a few years ago and won't ever go back, but it would be great to be able to see announcements of gigs and that sort of thing, from people who don't use anything to get the word out apart from the dreaded Instagram…
Thanks in advance!

Quilters of Mastodon: lets say I have a bunch of equal-size rectangles that I want to piece into strips (actually, I want sashing on both short and long sides so I can make a brickwork-type pattern. Should I:
A) sew sashing on the short side, piece it into a long strip, and then piece a long strip of sashing to the long side of the pieced strip?
B) sew sashing to the short side of a rectangle, then the long side, then piece a bunch together into a strip?
C) sew sashing to the long side of the rectangle, then the short side, then piece together into a strip?
D) a secret fourth thing??
What’s going to be best for seam-allowance management, minimizing distortion, and general ease of use?
@artcollisions any advice?

What's the best alternative to Google Translate? Preferably one without AI crammed into it.

So does anyone here know anything about embroidery machines? As in what to look for, what to avoid, bad brands, etc?

CW: advice wanted, celebrity death pool
Hello and welcome, morbid readers.
My family group chat has a yearly celebrity death pool. Who should I pick for 2026?
We score points as 100 minus age at death, and we get bonus points if the chat is actually glad they're gone (everyone always picks elon). I get 20 slots-- who do you think might croak this year?

Ok, a friend roped me into a game of Hallmark Christmas Movie Bingo. I’m super here for this, but any recommendations for how to watch shitty Hallmark movies without Netflix / Hulu / Amazon? We’ve nuked almost all of our streaming services for Reasons. What’s got the highest density of Hallmark for the lowest dollars?
