Cheeky #WhatImPlaying update for July 19th.
#AdvanceWars has taken up any and all of my #Gaming time this last two weeks. A deadly combination of absolutely loving the game and having a shiny new Retro handheld to play it on (RG477v).
I finished the game last night. I cheated on the final mission because honestly, that was just too much for my stressed out brain to compute.
Next week? I'm hoping to start up #Denshattack on my Steamdeck. If that doesn't click then maybe it's time I hit up a #Soulslike. I've only played like one of them this year, and that was DLC for LiesOfP.
-
I've finished #AdvanceWars
Did I cheat? Yes I did.
Do I feel good about it? Not really.
Am I glad it's over? Yes.Would I do it again? I would, and I will. Not sure if that means I'll be checking out Advance Wars 2, or if I'll finally get around to trying out that #Wargroove on the Steamdeck.
Either way. It's done. And now I move onto something else. Most likely that new bus hotness on Steam.

I've hit a bit of a wall in my #AdvanceWars playthrough.
Mission 17 - Enigma. I've put like a solid two hours into this one mission now and I just can't get a foothold on the map.
I'm only a few missions short of finishing this thing....but damn, I might have to bounce.
-
The fog of war in this game seems to be a little.... unevenly applied.
I'll stumble upon an enemy unit but can't do anything with it. The enemy stumbles upon my unit and they're still allowed to finish their move. That seems incredibly unbalanced.
-
Playing some #AdvanceWars and I just completed a mission that basically required me to spawn and then send out 20 odd infantry units to their death.
We ultimately outlasted the enemy, but fuck me I don't feel good about that in the slightest.
-
Playing #AdvanceWars reminds me of playing #XCOMEnemyUnknown a lot. Mainly because I'm fucking terrible at both of them.
-
After a very busy day I found a little time to start #AdvanceWars last night. Then about six hours later I put the thing down and went to sleep. I am now running on far too little sleep and it's all my own fault.
What a game though right?

Our first map is Kotsubujima, which translates to something like Small Island. This was localized as Ridge Island, and is the basis for the #advancewars War Room map. All of the 'New' campaign maps are in Advance Wars, though some are highly modified.
The enemy here starts off with a small purse of extra funds beyond their day 1 income, and yellow has a defensive advantage due to layout of the map. Otherwise, we begin on equal footing.
-
And that's it! Victory by rout on turn 49.
I've played this map often, on all the titles in the series, and this has been the most interesting battle I've had on it. The enemy CO, "Billy Gates" has a special ability - they get an extra 10,000 income every turn, which is how they were able to field such a powerful force so early in the game. The only thing to do was to flood the map with cheap units and stall them until I could afford powerful units of my own.
-
Ugh, the slog's almost over, finally made it to the enemy base. We're playing the Domination ruleset, so there are three conditions for victory - rout or HQ capture, as always, or by capturing 75% of the properties on the map. The enemy is still well-funded and is turtling up, so it's a toss-up if the win will come by rout or by domination.

This little dude's not feeling good about his prospects.
-
I think we've finally broken the stalemate! I moved my defensive rockets into the firing range of the enemy, forcing the AI to prioritize between rebuffing my advance and hitting my rockets. They split the difference, which left me with just enough firepower to do some lasting damage and start making solid gains again.
-
Well, everything went according to plan, and I managed to keep the enemy's rockets occupied until I could push the rest of their forces out of the north. Unfortunately, due to the level-up system in the game, this now means the enemy has a stack of super-powered rockets. I've built my own pile of rockets, and for the last 15 turns or so we've had a stalemate, trading control of the pass leading to the enemy base and turning it into an unpassable valley of death.
-
Third attempt is looking very promising so far. Rather than attempt to intimidate the enemy out of advancing their rockets, I have been feeding them infantry in the south. Since rockets cannot move and fire on the same turn, this means they are stuck defending against an endless stream of suicide attacks across the mountains. Hopefully, this will paralyze the enemy long enough for me to build up my forces in the north.
-
Well, I tried to turn it around but ultimately I had to surrender. Last time I had managed to cow the enemy rockets away from the middle, but this time they stacked them up right on the front lines. I was hoping to hold out long enough for them to run out of ammo so I could counter attack, but let's face it - you're in a bad spot if your best hope is to have more troops than your enemy has bullets.
-
This is not going nearly as well as last time.
-
Starting over, since my SD2SNES ate my save game...
-
Oh yeah, got 'em on the ropes now.

It's a bummer that Advance Wars Days of Ruin and Super Paper Mario never got official soundtrack releases because all we have are game rips of their tracks and the audio quality is just bad.
Super Paper Mario's ones are still listenable but I can't say the same for Days of Ruin.

we all laughed at Advance Wars making a head commanding officer of the army not know what an airport is, but... *looks at the US*
