Приветствую всех! Застали ли вы интернет через ADSL? Когда-то давно для многих он был единственной возможностью получить сравнительно быстрый и стабильный доступ к сети. Сейчас же практически никто им не пользуется, а модемы отдаются за бесценок, потому что они уже никому не нужны. И вот, спустя много лет, я решил попробовать сделать то, чего до меня практически никто не делал: раздобыть то самое оборудование, которое стояло у провайдера, запустить его и, наконец, поднять свою собственную домашнюю сеть и увидеть всё это в работе. Именно этим мы сейчас и займёмся. Заодно узнаем, как работает ADSL, а также вспомним, каким было посещение интернета в те годы и через какое оборудование мы тогда выходили в сеть. Back in the day when #ADSL was king and having 10Mbps fiber in a data-center was fantastic. I had the option to put a PC tower as a server, with a whole-ass C-net of IPs to boot.
What #Linux #Distro did I choose? Well, I was head over heals at the time with #Gentoo so of course I installed it on there. Was I wrong to do so? Well, was it fun? Hell yes! -
Protip: if you are connecting older #telephones (1980s/1990s) with #BritishTelecom plug to #VOIP via an #ATA (either standalone or that built into your router), beware that many RJ11 to BT socket adaptors now lack the ringing capacitor for the bell wire - some #telephone sets won't ring without it!
If you have a spare #ADSL filter this contains the capacitor and can be used to get your #phone to ring (plug it into BT socket from the ATA and telephone into the BT socket on the filter)

•Le cuivre fonctionnait même sans 230 V, c'était plutôt fiable...

The contractors to install fibre are now an hour and a half late for their appointment. I think the narrow lane, restricted access and the kiwi vine growing on the current copper line may have scared them off...
Our current #ADSL line is pathetic at only 7MBit/s so I am rather looking forward to the theoretical 1GBit/s that fibre offers...

Set an old laptop to upgrade from #Debian 12 to 13 today, while I do other things. I have a local apt cache so each upgrade pulls files locally rather than crush my feeble #adsl feed.
One day, perhaps before the heat death end of the universe, #Orange may get round to running fibre the 200 metres from the closest pole to my house along the lane...
Main desktop and laptop will be upgraded over the weekend.
So far every upgrade has been painless and KDE6 looks pretty.
