Hard to review this book:
- it's well written
- it's well grounded in science, technology and psychology
- no real thought provoking ideas, at least to me
- very very good imagining of the possible workings of an truly alien mind
- getting a bit sloppy with science and realism at the end in order to force some acceptable ending
- setting is very believable far future dystopia that "just happens to be" and remains unquestioned -

I've been recommended Adrian Tchaikovsky as an author a couple years back, and must admit I was hesitant because of my prejudice against the masculine name and my previous less than enjoyable experience with male authors, especially in the scifi genre.
I have, however, been proved wrong by Service Model, as I started to listen to it out of curiosity (because it's just easier to start an audiobook and dnf it if need be) and it's a lot of fun and very clever, but not in a rub-it-in-your-face -way. I also love that it's read by the author himself, as the author knows best what was intended with the words and therefore knows best what to emphasise.
I love the protagonist and the world, which feels strangely Fallout-ish at times, despite the lack of ghouls.
I'm about halfway through with the story and sincerely hope it stays as enjoyable as it has been so far! I'm already thinking I'll have to get a physical copy in my hands and do a read at some point in the future.

Time to post my opinions about the novels that were finalists for the Hugos this year!
In SERVICE MODEL, by Adrian Tchaikovsky, the valet robot Uncharles is responsible for laying out his owner's clothes every morning and helping with his morning ablutions... until one day when Uncharles cuts his owner's throat while shaving him. Uncharles doesn't remember the actual event, or why they did it.
The death brings a detective robot to the house, and after their ineffectual investigation is completed, Uncharles goes out to explore the world. It becomes clear that the system is crumbling: the detective talks for the sake of humans, even if there are no humans present; requests are put into queues that are not being processed; actions are repeated endlessly. I started to wonder, are there any humans left alive at all?
This book was hilarious, in a sardonic and cynical way. The humans built a system of convenience and automation that's smart, but not smart enough to be resilient or to understand its own mistakes. It's a perfect book for the AI-obsessed moment.
Not read by me: ALIEN CLAY, also by Adrian Tchaikovsky.

I both loved and hated #Shroud by #AdrianTchaikovsky (and the dozen authors he must keep locked in his basement to churn out #scifi books for him).
Everything that happens down on the alien moon is as brilliant and mind-bending as usual for his recent novels. However, the last thing we need right now are stories that make the overthrow of planet-destroying capitalism seem even more like a fantastical proposition.

Book Review – Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
My first book of 2025 is the second book I’ve read by author Ann Leckie. Both books, Translation State and Ancillary Justice, are set in the same world of the Imperial Radch series, though the stories are not directly connected. Reading Translation State led me to Ancillary Justice, the first book of Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy, and I am eagerly looking forward to book two.
Ancillary Justice introduces us to Breq, a soldier, at least that’s how they present themselves. In reality, Breq is the last surviving ancillary of Justice of Toren, a destroyed warship of the Radch, and is on a mission of vengeance, one which will immensely change the empire, either in success or failure.
Characters like Breq, the last fragment of an artificial intelligence over 2000 years old now contained in a human body, and Seivarden, a former Lieutenant on the Justice of Toren a thousand years ago. Both are fish out of water, Breq as an AI trying to pass as human and Seivardan, a human a thousand years out of time who has lost everything. These two do need each other, though, of course, neither knows or believes it for some time, and their shared journey throughout the book, along with Breq’s back story, is compelling on its own.
Ancillary Justice has the distinct honor of earning the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the only book to do so. I can see why and I think you will, as well. I completed the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and I look forward to reading the rest of this one.

Just finished #SaturationPoint by #AdrianTchaikovsky, and it one of the weakest of his 1000s of stories, but still more thought-provoking and entertaining than most of the #SciFi out there.
It is a short little novella (the audiobook is only 4.75 hours long) that mashes up #MinistryForTheFuture, #Annihilation, and #TheIslandOfDrMoreau, in that a mad scientist is living in an uninhabitable equatorial zone where the wet-bulb temperature will quickly kill you.
