I'm reading Adrian Tchaikovsky's Shards of Earth, and am currently about 65% in, being sucked deeper and deeper into its void as the mysteries start to unfold. And holy shit if it isn't mysterious! I want to know EVERYTHING.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the planet that was clearly the predecessor of the worlds in Alien Clay and Shroud (separate, stand alone books), because those were really fascinating.
And to think I almost DNFd this! Thank goodness for my 100 page rule, this one truly pulled through before the end of it.

Well, I know how I'm spending my time on this flight.

I've finished: Pretenders to the Throne of God by Adrian Tchaikovsky
A dramatic new installment in the The Tyrant Philosophers universe.
Tchaikovsky is great at conveying the personal cost of authoritarianism and war. The wounds it opens in body and soul, the sacrifices it demands and the price they exact.
This novel is about the deals with the devil our protagonists have made in an attempt to try and mend the wounds this brutal world has burdened them with.

Oooo! “Children of Strife” fourth book in the “Children of Time” series it out at the end of the month! All were good though I struggled with the third a bit.

Popped to a nearby town for the first time in years and managed to spend some gift cards we've collected from birthdays as a result of some relatives who insist on giving them. Always nice to come home with new books.
I like Adrian Tchaikovsky so that was an easy purchase. To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars sounded like my sort of book and it was deliciously thick. The Great When sounded fabulous too.

Finished reading #book #shroud by #AdrianTchaikovsky
Hard to review this book:
- it's well written
- it's well grounded in science, technology and psychology
- no real thought provoking ideas, at least to me
- very very good imagining of the possible workings of an truly alien mind
- getting a bit sloppy with science and realism at the end in order to force some acceptable ending
- setting is very believable far future dystopia that "just happens to be" and remains unquestioned -

Finished the third and most recent of #AdrianTchaikovsky 's Children of Time series - but the fourth is coming in a couple of months (https://www.panmacmillan.com/authors/adrian-tchaikovsky/children-of-strife/9781035057788)! This one really worked for me, with its blend of hard lives on an inadequately terraformed planet with surreal and brain-bending temporal inconsistencies and fairytale elements. While the dive into hyperevolved animal intelligence feels less deep than the first two Children books, I did appreciate the acknowledgement of a bird psychology book by Jennifer Ackerman, one of my favourite pop science authors. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #SciFi

I like most of the Adrian Tchaikovsky series, but I'm not certain what to recommended. Would you like more of a romp (he writes space pirates in a way) or something with a bit more meaning and depth?
