A Dream Within a Dream (Edgar Allan Poe – SRF 2013)

Edgar Allan Poe hat den modernen Detektivroman erfunden, seine traumverlorenen, pittoresken Welten haben den Symbolisten und Surrealisten den Weg gewiesen. Die Ahnungen und Sehnsüchte seiner unheimlichen inneren Welten sind Ausgangspunkt für die Text-Musik-Komposition «A Dream Within a Dream».

Der Mensch Poe taumelte von Katastrophe zu Katastrophe, magisch angezogen von jenen Abgründen, die er so kunstvoll beschrieb. Die Spannung zwischen Macht und Ohnmacht, zwischen Kontrolle und Hingabe charakterisiert auch die drei Texte, die Barbara Frey und Lukas Bärfuss ausgesucht haben. «Feen-Eiland» erzählt die Geschichte eines Mannes, der auf einer seiner Wanderungen in ein verwunschenes Tal kommt und dort in einem Fluss eine Fee entdeckt, die mit ihrem Kanu in einen Strudel gerät. «Das verräterische Herz» ist eine von Poes berühmten Horrorgeschichten. Ein Mord geschieht, der Mörder wird verhaftet und rechtfertigt seine Tat und sein Motiv in einer Rede. In «Die Flaschenpost» gerät ein Seemann während eines Sturmes auf ein geheimnisvolles Schiff. Die Besatzung besteht aus uralten Matrosen, die seit ewigen Zeiten die schwersten Stürme der Weltmeere durchsegeln, ohne dass ihr Schiff untergehen würde. As @liztai points out 'falling from a cliff and not die' is a neccessary staple in wuxia. But here we have the opposite trope that's even more common 'sitting on a roof and contemplating' (and sometimes drink). It happens so often I'm starting to question why wuxia houses aren't built with rooftop balconies. Does this have any bearing in history, or is just such an alluring picture every production falls for it?

Yeah, yeah, haha, a man in a dress - we all know how "fresh" that joke is. But I want to point out that the actor is carrying the clothes extremely well. He's hardly unique either. That tiny cringe that Western male actors do when they need to wear women's, or just unusually colourful, clothes is almost non-existent in the Chinese.

This is a Chinese production, they _know_, but you have no idea how happy it makes me when a character reads an old Chinese book and turn the pages from left to right*. Also, while it's not visible here, it's a sutra bound** volume, for extra flair. A++!

Glorious earpiece! Probably not the most comfortable to wear since the actor's ear has turned slightly red, but definitely better than the clips used in earrings for people without pierced ears*. The character does wear a silver moon under that ear from time to time, so now I'll stare at his earlobes like a ferengi sizing up their opponent untill I can see if they're pierced or not.

The goldbrushed tassels conveniently showed up for me to pass them on to you! They're not really brushed - the effect was made by hanging a few threads of gold around a core of blue ones. And they go really well with the wave embroideries on the rim!

It's not just Li Sixteen's hats. Song Yi Meng is literally dressed up as a yellow butterfly here, and that [spoiler] *bleeeep* [spoiler] *gröööönk* *clown tooter* *braaaaaaaal* *fog horn* *internet debate* *fandom drama* *horn of Rohan*...which I think is very clever!

The costuming department really has fun with Li Sixteen's hats! I think this the fourth one - unusually toned down, and with a tastefull bronze feel to it. Keeping my fingers crossed for one more with things hanging from the brim though, in hindsight those goldbrushed blue tassels were awesome.

The boys have it all here; the awesome hat! the slutty fur collar! the velvet! the embroideries! the gold details!...

Yet Song Yi Meng's hanfu outshines them both. The 3D flowers, the pink washes, and the light fabric turns her into a romantic cloud as soon as she moves. Plus... it is very beautiful!

Heh. Every actor in this drama is making the most of their chance to make faces. Understandable - that must be one of the main reasons people get into the profession, and anything even close to an idol drama usually has the cast keeping their faces aesthetically bland.

Song Yu De is all dolled up! I've already commented on 7th prince's clothes, and hers are equally awesome - even in action figure form. I so hope the actress got to keep this one (or one of them if they made several versions)!

First of all; I crave that shelf in the background! And I hope they've hidden a skelleton in the middle.

Those costumes tho... They're magnificent! Someone handed the designers a big wad of money and said "There's more if you need it*"! Half of that budget went into the prince's belt tassel that just goes on and on and oooooon.

Fascinated by how the costume designers have made A Lot with a lot here. While there is a elaborate work done on this bridal hanfu, it's made to look even more advanced by covering a lot of ground with appliqués*, and using yellow textured brocade for contrasting areas. And they know the exact maximum of dingle dangle to put in her hair before it looks strange.

The streaming blankie btw. Knitted out of wool/alpacka yarn on a circular knitting machine. Heavy and unwieldy as heck, sheds like a stressed long-hair, and is the warmest and fluffiest blanket I've ever owned. Totally the best!

Next drama to gooo! I had forgotten how Viki put up a blurring title vignette after 15s when you pause. To get a clear still without the progress bar I really have to time it right! I am enjoying this one so far- it is just so ridiculous at times that it makes you laugh out loud.
I wasn't quite ready to let go of "The Prisoner of Beauty" yet- so this is nice having two of the same actors.
