#vendredilecture en lisant un livre recommandé en passant par @molosovsky la semaine dernière : « Inventing the Renaissance » de l’écrivaine états-unienne de SFF #AdaPalmer (ici présente : @adapalmer), en l’occurrence aussi historienne, spécialiste de la Renaissance. Tenemos el poder de hacer cosas pero no tenemos el control sobre sus consecuencias.
Ante un dilema no solo existen las opciones de luchar con un bando o con el otro, también existe la opción de no luchar, y ésa es una decisión que acaba beneficiando a uno de los bandos, sería engañarse el pensar que al no actuar estamos realmente extrayendo nuestro poder de la ecuación.
La acción y la inacción son igual de importantes. Solamente se diferencian en que una es más cómoda que la otra, pero las dos tienen implican el mismo poder, y las dos tienen consecuencias muy importantes.
Luchar por un futuro mejor no significa conseguir el futuro que imaginamos, eso sería una victoria completa. Pero las victorias completas no existen, solo existen las parciales. Por eso luchar siempre merece la pena, recordando que no tenemos el control sobre el futuro y que las luchas parciales son las que orientan el camino de la historia hacia un futuro más parecido al que buscamos con la lucha a corto plazo. Una victoria parcial sigue siendo una victoria.

El papel de las resistencias y de las luchas de barrio es mucho más grande de lo que los medios de comunicación admiten.
Porque su existencia significa la debilidad moral de quien tiene el poder. El hecho de que exista gente antirracista y se organicen y demuestren su existencia es suficiente para quitar legitimidad y fuerza a cualquier política racista.
Ideas que voy sacando de esta entrevista.. muy muy muy interesante para pensar la evolución de la política al menos en Europa durante mucho tiempo.

I love how @adapalmer not just uses different quotation mark styles to mark different languages, but also when a character switches languages mid-conversation, the mismatched «opening and closing" quotation marks mark that as well

I have finished reading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. When I finished the first book in the series (https://darkfriend.social/@hybridhavoc/111976712993200601) I said that it felt incomplete without this second one. Now that I have finished it I can say that these are really phenomenal books, especially for anybody that is into political intrigue and sci-fi.
It feels like a more proper stopping place, allowing me to move on and maybe come back to the series at a later date.

Szesnasta pozycja czytelnicza na mojej liście w tym roku to "Siedem kapitulacji" Ady Palmer. Po trzeci tom nie sięgnę. Ci, którym podobał się tom pierwszy, spodoba się i drugi. Tym, którzy nie mogli pierwszy przejść, tym bardziej niech omijają drugi. Zalety i wady są dokładnie takie same jak poprzednio - a właściwie to z łatwością mogę wymienić zalety (światotworzenie, bohaterowie, nowatorstwo, skomplikowane intrygi), natomiast wady... no nie wiem. Jakoś mi to wszystko razem nie zagrało.

Prediction is hard, especially about the future. The assumptions that go into prediction are always incomplete, not least because human beings have free will and agency and can change the circumstances that go into the assumptions. The very best science fiction embodies this principle. I'm thinking here of the likes of #AdaPalmer, an historian *and* sf writer whose deep historical knowledge informs her sf and her pedagogy at the University of Chicago:

Just finished #TerraIgnota #book series by #AdaPalmer and I have to say I'm mind-blown.
Yes, the books are pretentious at times, but the world is so beautifully crafted, the characters seem human and there is no easy "good" or "bad" side in the conflict.
That's a good sci-fi written by a historian, where technology takes a second place to human culture, and approaches to life. For me - that was really refreshing.
