Back in June 2025 #PaulKrugman had a chat with history professor and writer #AdaPalmer about history and narrative. I think it is very much worth a listen.

There was a clip of this video in my feed this morning, and the whole video is way more fantastic even
Dwarkesh Patel interviewing Ada Palmer

I love how @adapalmer not just uses different quotation mark styles to mark different languages, but also when a character switches languages mid-conversation, the mismatched «opening and closing" quotation marks mark that as well

Paul Krugman engages with Ada Palmer in a thought-provoking dialogue on her book, "Inventing the Renaissance." They argue that the Renaissance is an evolving process rather than a defined era, influenced by diverse academic perspectives. Palmer critiques modern interpretations of figures like Machiavelli and emphasizes the cultural flourishing of Renaissance Italy as a complex narrative of power and legitimacy. @ohalexsimmons If you want some meaty SciFi that has a bunch of history/philosophy in it, I'd recommend the Terra Ignota series by #AdaPalmer (who is also a historian, and on Mastodon).

I have finished reading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. When I finished the first book in the series (https://darkfriend.social/@hybridhavoc/111976712993200601) I said that it felt incomplete without this second one. Now that I have finished it I can say that these are really phenomenal books, especially for anybody that is into political intrigue and sci-fi.
It feels like a more proper stopping place, allowing me to move on and maybe come back to the series at a later date.

I #AmReading Seven Surrenders by Ada Palmer. Book 2 of Terra Ignota.

It is a world in which near-instantaneous travel from continent to continent is free to all. And it is a world in which, unknown to most, the entire social order is teetering on the edge of collapse.Because even in utopia, humans will conspire. And also because something new has arisen: Bridger, the child who can bring inanimate objects to conscious life.

I #AmReading Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. Been on my TBR for a while now.

Mycroft Canner is a convict. For his crimes he is required, as is the custom of the 25th century, to wander the world being as useful as he can to all he meets. Carlyle Foster is a sensayer—a spiritual counselor in a world that has outlawed the public practice of religion, but which also knows that the inner lives of humans cannot be wished away.https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/735ebd1f-2175-4658-ab5c-64841b99e30a

@FantasticMrScott If you love the sort of dense world-building that Neal Stephenson does, I'd highly recommend #AdaPalmer's Terra Ignota series.

CW: Long thread/23
Prediction is hard, especially about the future. The assumptions that go into prediction are always incomplete, not least because human beings have free will and agency and can change the circumstances that go into the assumptions. The very best science fiction embodies this principle. I'm thinking here of the likes of #AdaPalmer, an historian *and* sf writer whose deep historical knowledge informs her sf and her pedagogy at the University of Chicago:

@ameimse J'ai découvert #AdaPalmer aux #Utopiales le weekend dernier à #Nantes

Just finished #TerraIgnota #book series by #AdaPalmer and I have to say I'm mind-blown.
Yes, the books are pretentious at times, but the world is so beautifully crafted, the characters seem human and there is no easy "good" or "bad" side in the conflict.
That's a good sci-fi written by a historian, where technology takes a second place to human culture, and approaches to life. For me - that was really refreshing.
