Never heard of them before (a friend took me), but LOVED every second of their set! I started paying for a Nebula.tv subscription a few months back as a way to support #JacobGeller, #münecat, #AdamNeely, and other video creators more directly.
As #youtube continues to think I have an ad-blocker enabled, I'm looking to move my video viewing over to Nebula. I just need more suggestions on who to follow.

This #AdamNeely video on #Laufey and #jazz is absolutely worth a watch. I was vaguely familiar with Laufey before this but I have only ever heard sweeping orchestral ballad stuff from her that sounded very nostalgic and mid-century but I had no idea that she considers herself a “modern jazz” singer and that it’s a reputation she’s getting. Adam’s look at the cultural and musical history of jazz here is such a great way to put it all into (fair) context.

When I was a kid, I was taught classical violin at 7 but hated it - it put me off learning music till I was 12. I've known my entire life that all I wanted to do was be a musician and I'm lucky enough to do it as a job now.
Even now, the implicit white supremacy of so much of the classical music world annoys the fuck out of me.

I love Adam Neely's explanations of music theory and what it's like to be a jazz musician struggling to make a living in New York. But I wasn't so sure I liked his actual music. I'd call it electro-jazz . It's packed with technically sophisticated harmonies and song structures, and rhythmic tricks like quintuplets. But despite my love for such stuff, it didn't move me.

If you remember that time Katy Perry was sued for $2.8 million, and lost, in a copyright infringement case over 8 notes of an ostinato melody ... well, that verdict was overturned in March of 2020.
The case might be known to some reading this through Adam Neely's excellent analsyis. Over which he was sued by Warner Brothers for a segment that did not include WB's own claimed work, over which they'd just lost a copyright case. But I digress.
